I did it again!

Nice Mike! Looking forward to seeing you.

Not sure if I'm bringing the MSM or the Bavaria, but if I bring the MSM, you can see first hand some of the interesting fitment for the FMII kit.

Figured I'd add this to the thread. Last chance to see them before they disappear in the install.

A few weeks back, I installed a Thompson Oil filter relocation. Was some difficulty with the hose routing, but nothing unexpected.

I am still dealing with a leak, but not from the normal locations. The temperature sensor bung that was added to the relocation base comes with a plug, but that plug does not appear to be sealing completely. It's only a very tiny seeping leak, but fixing it has been troubled by not being able to find the right size hex wrench to remove it. SAE or Metric, neither one has a hex size that fits properly, and the closest fit I can find doesn't even budge it.

Anyway, pics from the install:

The two key parts:

The base mounted:

All installed. I since rotated the intake pipe to lift the BOV about another inch, for more clearance.

Yes, my engine bay is getting dirtier.

Talked to the shop. There was no pilot or release bearing in the kit for some reason and totally missed that. Had to order those in. Diff work is done and diff is in. Just waiting on the two bearings. Should be picking it up tomorrow.

My pilot bearing was 'within 100 miles of shattering', so good timing on that. Probably explains the faint ghost of a rattle I hear periodically and never solved

I was surprised as well when I heard it and I did some digging. I found plenty of threads discussing it, so apparently it's fairly common for the MSM's pilot bearing to fail in 45-50k? All recommendations are to not replace it with the OEM one, though I didn't find any reference of if other brand bearings actually last longer. Plenty of NB Miata references regarding it as well, so possibly not just MSM.

Yes, we have tickets and hotel paid for already. Presumably I am picking it up today, though if not we will be staying the night down at my wife's sister's house tonight and picking up tomorrow would helpfully be the fallback. Otherwise, I won't be able to bring it, and we will just have the 2. No reason left for delays though.

so it's fairly common huh, i'm at 72k...is it something i should have replaced? it seems like it's a lot of work to get to ? i imagine i'd hear some noise first though?

Yeah, it is basically the same process as a clutch replacement, so dropping the transmission and all. You will get an unidentified vibration/rattling for sure that appears to be RPM related but can shift based on clutch movement or in vs out of gear. No noise means no problem.

I don't know how common it actually is. It's common enough that it shouldn't be surprising, but then that doesn't mean that it's even 20% common. The bias of forum statistics :)

Hmm, weird. I wonder if my OEM pilot bearing was replaced when the bastard clutch was put in.

It's likely. It's one of those parts that should be replaced when the transmission is dropped, just because it's a cheap part that is easy to replace, and you don't want to have to drop the transmission later on to replace just it. It is part of every RX-8 clutch kit. I was surprised that it wasn't included with the FM happy meal. I thought for sure it was when i ordered it for my 99. Though, I didn't get the clutch bracket for the interlock bypass. I already just used the one off my 99, but still. Hmm. Might have to send a note to FM regarding that.

Nevermind. I just found the package in the original box with the bearings and bracket. My fault there. Oh well. I have spares. Well, more spares

Love the gearing now. 65mph is 3,000rpm, 85mph is 4,000. Any 1 gear feels slower of course, but I can drop a gear lower than before in most circumstances.

After a weekend up to Watkins Glen and back, I love the gearing even more. Got my best ever mileage too, 32mpg. Granted, it helped that I was trailing my wife in her 2 most of the time, but still beat a previous best of 28mpg (for which I was trying to get good mileage)

I am going to re-bleed the clutch line and re-adjust the clutch pedal today, as by the time I got home ~600 miles total since installation, it's getting more and more difficult to change gears if the revs aren't matched, like the clutch is very slightly engaged. Nearly didn't get it into reverse at all last night.

Nice mike! Good seeing you and the wife!! And regarding reverse, it's tough anyway, I got to first now then to R.

Nice job on the mileage, Mike! Top up or down? Top up, I can squeak out 235-240 miles before the needle leaves the half tank mark. Top down, usually 220ish.

This isn't the normal tough reverse. It physically would not engage, and I could hear the gear teeth bouncing slightly as I was trying. This is while stopped, clutch to the floor. Just like the clutch wasn't disengaged far enough, and was spinning the transmission input shaft still.

Top up for a less anxious puppy (road noises and all), but AC was on which would mitigate a fraction.
