Hwy 9 Fun Run!

I just can't wait for the 28th. (drive) Laguna Seca is gonna be good fun. Maybe that's why I feel the need to be up in the hills, 'cause i don't wanna embarass myself on the track.(eek2)

yeah omg people are going to push their proteges for the first (and probably last) time this year

I wish I had the cash a few months ago to get a rollbar, then I would've been able to go too :(

oh well, you make do with what you have....

haha and don't worry about the track you're gonna kick some ass since you have 200x the experience with every kind of corner imaginable

Haha, it's a 2000 and it's an automatic and it has some crappy tires and it's completely stock, I don't really wanna be picking up the rear :)

I know, I for one can't wait to get back out there. I wish I could drive more often, but with the late night drives it's often too late for me with living in Morgan Hill and living the engaged lifestyle.

But once my car is back in running condition I want to take it out, I just hope it's all running and put together before Laguna, or else I am gonna be hella bummed.

I have no suspension mods. :'( and I can't stay up too late. (sleep)(homework)
But this weekend looks like I'll be free one night for a drivey. (drive)
new brakelines are in and the wheels are good.

yeah the satisfaction of me bashing in some altezzas with my 4 D-Cell Maglite (a.k.a the African-American beating stick) will surely help

yeah yeah laugh it up, that actually happened to me. stupid fat ass guy had been hitting on my girlfriend, then i showed up and he went out and keyed my car and smashed my tail lights.

Good thing the cost of a stock light from the dealer is the same as a pair of new altezzas, you guys know you are all just jealous.

Sorry for the crabbiness. :) Everyone fixes up their car for a different reason. Maybe my method of beating the crap out of the s*** I spent my "head-earned money" on isn't the wisest choice either.

ok...I've been reading this thread from time to time since hwy 9 is mentioned. Whatever you guys/gals do, please don't be dumb out there. Hwy 9 is very popular for motorcyclists and there have been many instances where a car has gone over the DY. Yes, many bikes go over the DY too, I know.
A buddy and myself almost got killed by a red pontiac sunfire on Del Puerto on an early morning ride a while back. The driver was half in our lane and nearly struck my buddy ahead of me. By the time the driver reached me he was still 1 ft over the DY with tires screeching.
A while back some peeps from a RSX club went for a drive on Stage Rd (I think). One RSXer went over the DY on a blind turn to make a pass. A group of motorcyclists were coming from the other side and one rider was struck. He made it out ok, but got hurt pretty bad.

If you're so set on pushing your car on the street, be safe. If you really want to push it, keep it on the track. If you want an additional challenge, try out hwy 9 on a motorcycle if you haven't already done so.

edit: something useful from this post
Go at 60-75%, leave the other 25-40% to unexpected stuff like deer, gravel, and other vehicles.

Yeah I see tons of motorcyclists out at 1am in the morning. I also don't go over the double yellow, I just pretend I am in Japan and drive on the left for the extra JDM effect.

THANK YOU! Some people don't seem to understand this!

If you're driving at 9.9/10 and something unexpected happens (and this is the street, it WILL happen) then you're ******.

by the way, I'm not picking a fight or saying any of you are driving irresponsibly. I have nothing to make that claim.

from your previous post:
"If we want people that will actually drive with us then we need to frequent the 4AG boards, zilvia.net, MR2 boards, s*** as scary as it may sound (The MIATA forum!).... etc etc

We're looking for people to drive their car at 9/10ths on a board for economy priced sedans. Don't get me wrong, the car might have plenty of potential and capability but I don't think it's within the mentality of the car owners here to drive their car like a bat out of hell. Most people are terrified of a decreasing radius sweeper with a rock wall on one side and a 1000ft+ drop on the other."

Am I misunderstanding what you're saying? To me this implies that you're driving at 90%, hence my cautionary post. And yes some riders do ride at 1am. My friend rides at the oddest hours, sometimes I question his sanity :).

Also, are you saying that driving at 75mph is 75% of you and your car's capability?

I was throwing numbers out there to make a point. Sure, on certain stretches of road, 75 mph might be 75% of mine and the car's capability. My point was that I have seen people take that certain stretch of road more dangerously at 45mph - crossing the double yellow, zigzaging through the corner, laying on the brakes in mid-corner, totally missing the apex, etc, etc. If you're driving like a jackass you can cause your car to lose traction at 45mph whereas someone NOT driving like a moron can have that 25% of traction left even at 75mph.

What's more dangerous? A car that's lost traction or one that has 25% left (velocity notwithstanding)

Of course, on the flipside, we can't dismiss velocity since a car moving at 75mph will take at least twice as long to stop as a car moving at 45mph. But that's where we make a judgement based on road conditions, time of day, traffic (or lack thereof) and adjust our speed accordingly. Sure, I might blast to 75 mph at 2am but you won't see me going over 45-50 (at the fastest stretches) during the daytime with so many other cars and motorcycles and bicycles present. And last but not least, pigs.

tell me about it Nate. I have 2 Miatas that has the susp. goodies and the my P5 and still havent had a chance to meet w/ you guys.. :(
It just really sucked that I live in the other side of the hills...One of these days I'll try to join you guys.

Yeah! No worries, Natey. The time I met up with you guys, I was basically doing a shake-down run for the upcoming RallyX and Laguna Seca.
I'm glad I wasn't going too fast, as I found out that my car suffers from brake fade. This is after upgrading the front brakes with VR4 rotors and Escort GT calipers, SS lines, and Porterfield R4-S pads.
I'll be rebuilding the calipers this week and see what happens next.

Next up, 929 master cylinder and Protege brake booster!

After I get the brakes sorted, I'll be up for a weekly mountain ride.

With work and GF stuff going on, I don't make it out as much as I used to either. I'm glad you guys have fun, but to knock us just because we "waste" our money on mods that we don't use isn't fair.
Who says that we can only drive on 9? I go for drives on my own or with other friends. I live right off San Felipe/Metcalf. I'm always driving back there. Calaveras? There too. And when I'm in unfamiliar territory, I'm glad that with the upgrades I have done, I can have a little fun a new road.

I guess what I'm try to say is that even though we don't drive together much anymore, thats not a good reason to knock those of us who have other things going on.

Good point, Tony, but this is the Hwy9 fun run thread. I just got bummed because lately I'm the only Mazda around on 9 most nights.
lol, Maybe I was a little eggy this morning, too. Sniveling about the fact that you guys have actual lives to attend to.(crazy)
