Are the HVAC faceplate units from newer 3's (2006-2009) interchangeable with the ones from 2004-2005? such as http://images.thecarconnection.com/...-touring-temperature-controls_100276374_m.jpg

possibly. The one in the picture has auto climate control which I think was only available on grand touring models. So if you can find a more common i or s model it should match up.
