How To: Retrofit HID projectors into P5 headlights

that looks amazing, could you tell us all the parts you ended up using for the retrofit?

Thanks,
The parts are:
FX-R Projectors
E55-R shrouds painted silver
SP20 headlights (Protege5)
Headlight shroud and low beam reflector bowl painted satin black

And most importantly, many, many hours. :)
Well worth it though.

Wow, FX-R bixenons in P5 lights? VERY nice!

What are you doing with the halogen high beam? Converted to DRL? Or just double the high beam when you hit it?

From what I gather our lights work very different to yours lol, we have low beam, high beam, parkers and the little orange lights as indicators. Not sure what's considered DRL...

Wired it up so the halogen still works as per normal, and the bixenon highs come on at the same time. So basically if I flash someone, they get eye damage ;)

SOUNDS like our lights work

(DRL is daytime driving light-basically high beam is on all the time but at lower wattage-but off when the low beams are turned on)

but YES to double damage with HID high beam and halogens! lol

Ahh yeah ours is a bit different, we only have the high beam halogen at full power or off, but there's a little 5w T10 bulb on the top of the high beam reflector that is considered our parker light, stays on when you have low and high beams on, or you can have just the parkers on (supposed to leave them on if you park on an unlit street)

It's interesting how different countries have so many slight differences :)

There still interest in these? And Matt, you still around doing them?

The retro fit and everything is awesome but I don't understand how you can make the high beam work? Technically the P5 has high beam that opens next to the low beam.. How can you make them not open and have the bi-xenon work?

Ok so my car P5 is equipped with DRL.. Will I have a problem with all that?
I went on TheRetroFitSource.com and took the "Bi-xenon FX-R Stage III Kit" in the "Complete retrofit Kits" section.
Is that everything I need to make it work?
Also what is the difference between 50w and 35w? I heard 50w may be dangerous because originally the car was built for 35w... Is that right or wrong?

Thank you for the help

Nope, that is all you need, everything in that kit is what you will need. 50W is brighter than the 35W, and should only be used with projectors, which you will. People run 50w ballasts without projectors, so you should be fine.

Thank you for your quick reply!
Ok so before I begin the surgery on my car I have two last questions.
How big do I have to drill the holes for the projectors? He said to make it 3 times bigger but that not very precise. How big should the circumference be? Can I base myself on something?
After everything is installed, what do I do with the old high beam? Do I let the bulb inside without plugging it to anything?

Oh and how do I remove the front bumper? I have a hard time finding the right screws..

Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it.

It's a bit hard to be precise with the hole you drill on the back. I made mine using a hole saw about 5cm in diameter (2 inches). Then I used a dremel to make the hole bigger. You need to get it the right shape so the projector sits as far back as you want and points straight. If I can find a picture I'll put it up but not sure if I took one at that stage..

The high beams are up to you. Probably best you leave the bulb in or you'll have a black hole in the back of your lens. I left mine wired up then tapped into the wiring for the bixenon shutter. So when my high beams went on I had the stock ones plus the bixenons :D

Not sure about drilling, I used the Morimoto Mini's that are pretty much plug and play and don't require any drilling/cutting. As far as the high beam, if your kit comes with the bi-xenon relay, you plug that into the high beam plug and now both high and low will come out of the projector. This will leave your high beam bulb useless, but I suggest leaving it in. If you don't use the relay, then your high beams will work as normal.
