As there are some people with a demand of that extra light, but dont want anything aftermarket, here is your choice. This is a 'how-to' for 3rd generation Mazda Protege DX/LX on OEM factory fog lights instalation.

Disclaimer: If you chose to install the fog lights on your own and brake something, I am not responsible in any way. Just simply providing the instalation instructions.

The Process

Everything in the car is prewired from the dealer, including the fog light relay.

The whole instalation process should take you about an hour maybe hour and 30 minutes with right tools.

Tools for instalation:
philips screw driver (preferably short stubby one in order to get the wheel well plastic screws, and also a long one to get to the screws behind the bumper)
10mm socket wrench, 12mm or 14mm socket wrench (one of them), a friend and your pair of hands hehe.
flashlight.
A friend.

You will have to remove the front bumper in order to install these fogs.

Removal of bumper:

1. remove plastic screws (clips) from wheel well and put them in a safe place so you wont lose them

2. remove 2 screws at the bottom of the bumper (each screw is located on the bottom of the bumper in front of the wheel. This is where short stubby screw driver comes in handy)

3. get under the front bumper and remove 6 (i think 6) 10mm bolts that hold bumper and plastic under-carriage spash guards in place.

4. remove two 12mm bolts (i think they're 12mm if not then 14mm...I'll double check that) that are located under the bumper in the middle (they are about one foot apart from each other)

5. Grab your long philips screw driver, sit next to the wheel (on each side) bend the wheel well plastic towards the wheel. There is a screw on each side behind the bumper, that holds it to the chassis. Remove it. It is on the same level as the headlight. Stick your hand in there and you should find it with no problem. The hat of the screw is pointing towards the rear of the car.

6. Once 1st 5 steps are completed, grab bumper from one side and let your friend grab it from another end. The bumper is sitting on two tabs. Each tab is located under the corner of the headlight. ATENTION!!! BE CAREFUL!!! Pull the bumper upwards and then pull it forwards away from the car. Be carefull pulling it away from the car. Make sure that the bumper is off those tabs otherwise you might brake the points (o-shaped) that are sitting on the tabs. (I did brake one of them, now one of them is like a locking washer shape, loop doesnt close so from time to time i have to shove my bumper onto the tab)

YAY you got the bumper off!!! Put it somewhere, where you can work with it and wont scratch the bottom).

Now its time to install the fog lights, but wait, there are plastic covers that sit in the lower part of the grill, where fogs suppose to go.
Each cover has two tabs (i think, if not then its 3, dont remember)
Press on each and remove the covers.

Once the covers are out, its time to install the fogs.

Instalation of fogs:

Each fog light has 2 plastic tabs on each. (i think there are two....you can see one of them on each foglight in your picture. Its plastic and its on the side of the fogs. I think there is a second tab and its on either top or bottom. Once again not sure about the vertical tab, hehe sorry) These tabs were made so you dont have to adjust the fogs (speaking of beam direction)

1. Take the fogs (disconnect the metal brackets from them) and push them from the front of the bumper into their appropriate wholes. Once you see that plastic tabs are snapped in the holes of the plastic foglight housing, leave them alone.

2. After the fogs are in the plastic housing, take the metal brackets and secure the fogs with these brackets from under the plastic housing.

Fogs are in, now its time to connect the wiring.

Wiring the fogs

1. As said earlier, your car came prewired for the fogs. The wire that was installed by MAZDA is tucked in under the passenger headlight and its tied up with a plastic string. You cant miss it, hehe, it has two harnesses on it.

2. Once you have located this wire, pull it out. The front bumper has tabs on the bottom of it. These tabs are to hold this wire in place. Place the wire behind each tab and connect the fog light harnesses into the appropriate harnesses on the wire that you found under the head light.

Woohoo! Fogs are installed and wired! Take a brake, drink some coffee with your friend, but dont get comfortable :)

Now its time to install the fog light switch that came with your fog lights.

Fog light switch instalation

1. In order to install the switch, open your driver's side door. On the side of the plastic panel (its the side of the plastic dashboard pannel that is sitting right against the driver's side door when its shut)
You have to pull out that plastic piece. To do this, stick your hand from the bottom of the dashboard pannel (to the left of the steering wheel) and push the panel out. Its gonna be a bit of pain in the ass, because of your hand position.

2. Once the side panel plastic cover is out, push out the plastic cover that is next to the coin holder (its next to the dashboard lights dimmer control). Push out the plastic piece and install the fog light switch in its place.

3. Once the fog light switch is installed, you have to get under the dashboard (your face should be right against your pedals, haha) This is where a flashlight will help you out. There are two relays to the left of the pedals. One of them has wire with harness coming out of it that is not connected to anything. Once again, its also tied up just like the fog light wire.

4. Untie the relay wire and connect the harness to the fog light switch.

YOU ARE DONE!!!

Go ahead! Turn your headlights switch on, and try turning on the fog lights.

Admire your accomplishment, pat yourself on your back and give yourself a complement on a great job. Oh yea dont forget to thank your friend (thumb)

Hope this helps! (thumb)

P.S.
The way the fog lights are wired in our cars from factory, they turn on only when headlights are on. You can also rewire two wires on the fog light relay, so you can control the fog lights independently from your headlights.
Here is a thread on how to rewire the fogs for independent ON. http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3721
all you need is the 1st post and it takes about 10-15 minutes to do. One of the best quick mods, hehe.

I may be doing this in the next couple of days. I'll try to take pictures as I go, make this how-to a little more comprehensive for the visual learners among us.

Thanks again, DiS.

Does the alos from 01-03 protege can fit on 99-00? (help) (help)
good question. Ill find out tomorrow.....my co-worker has 2000 Protege. Ill check it out.

Most likely not. My 1999 had no empty socket on the dash harness for the fog light relay to plug into. I was able to get my fogs wired up after I switched to the 2001+ dash harness.

I installed my fogs this weekend ran into a couple snags, anyone got any pics on where to find the driver side connector? Found the passenger side no prob but unless I need glasses its stashed somewhere i cant find.. also passenger side light didnt work... there is power to the switch but nothing happens when i turn it on, maybe the fuses are finished but ill worry about that after i get the 2nd light plugged in, any help would be appreciated
thanks

its one single wire for both fogs. Its just it has two plug-in harnesses for both fogs. One harness is at the end of the wire and the other one is somewhere in the middle of the wire-bundle. As far as them working...did you connect the wire from relay to the switch under the dash?

Awesome, ill check it out soon thanks for the advice, as for the switch yea its plugged, it lights up with the dash lights so....

hmmmm. Maybe check the fuse for the fog lights. I think its in the inside of the cabin fuse box.

I think you have to take off the bumper just because the factory prewired harness is sitting next to the window washer fluid reservuar and i dont think you can get to it (untangle it) without taking off the bumper. Not 100% sure though....I did this a while ago and don't remember hehe.

I was just about to ask if you could tell me specifically where that wiring harness is. I just ran outside to look under my headlight and all I could find was dust :P

So just to confirm it - the wiring harness is down towards the bottom of the car close to the windshield washer reservoir ?
