How-to: +2psi for a cheap $5

I did this mod today w/ a different spring than what was shown. my boost now seems to come up quicker and stronger and it upped it a consistent 1 psi. seems to be a good mod IMO. thanks for the translation/thread speedbeaver

What's your psi at now and how different was your spring?

At Autozone there is an assortment of carburetor springs in a 5 pack. Red background and a white triangle with a red M in the top right corner. Prt # 59002 in the top left. Cost 5.99. I used the most symmetrical one, it had one hook already. Gained 2 psi exactly! Definately worth trying out. Took 15 min to install.

Just perused this thread and found it funny as hale. Just let this be a lesson for all you newbs. Just because some guy has a whole bunch of green squares doesn't mean s***. See how the other guy busted out Corky Bells book. This is the kind of cited correction we need. If there's a problem look it up in a primary source. Don't think just because a mod is cheap doesn't mean it ghetto or a dumb idea. This is a great idea.
A:readily available and in various rates
B:easily observable, replacable, and servicable
C:Ability to adjust boost pressure to calibrate for heat soak into the spring(spring rates vary with temperature)

^^^Hallelujah brother....speak the gospel!

Not to make this an argument of scientific rigor or scrutiny, but glad to see that someone else understands the importance of backing up their s*** with well-established literature.

It is also important to note that most great advances in science have been a result of serendipity.....someone tried something that hadn't been tried before and got lucky. Lateral thinking is always sure to get people riled up. Why make something complex when you can, "keep it simple stupid?" One part achieves the same end as many, and at a better price. Golden.

my car used to peak at about .52 bar now it goes up to .61. I used 2 different springs on my setup. one real short and one long so I could change out the longer spring for more or less boost if I want to. I have the short spring attached to the turbo side of the wastegate control arm. I went and looked at springs too while I was at the parts store today . Help makes exactly what is needed but I didn't get the part #. It is pretty obvious what pack you need once you see all the different choices. The spring also took me from a 15.5 1/4 mile to a 15.2

I did the same when I took a trip to Michigan to go see Tekkie. And we tried it, it was very simple even though I di dnot do it. But it worked, I boosted atleast 2psi more , unfortunately my Manifold is leaking exhaust again for the third time. So It now peaks at 8psi then slowly drops to like 5 or 6. It sucks and Im stuck.

Dont know what to look for in this situation. The dealership is saying they are trying everything to fix it but last time they changed my whole manifold and they said it should not happen again. WTF is wrong with my manifold?

Maybe this should not be in this thread but can someone give me any I deas as to wtf is going on................

But other then my problems, EXCELLENT MOD GUYS.

THANKS.

maybe its not ur manifold thats the problem. you might have a loose pipe that could be leaking under pressure.

Like what kind of pipe?

Brought it in last month I think fo rthis and they replaced my whole manifold and re-tapped the holes and added Locktight and s***.

They said that it should be the end of it. My engine sounds like a DEISEL agian. And I can smeel the Exhaust leaking from Cyl. #1 which is the one they said was screwed?

So I know the symptoms........... and know the location of where it was fixed. So I know that its leaking again.

Well I hope it not the same problem and easely fixed.that would be super.........................

how do you know the cylinder number?
*sniff sniff* Yep, definitely smells like cylinder #1. (rofl2)

Well the smell only comes from one side of the Block. And when my Manifold was replaced the Dealership told me which Cyl. it was......... And yes it smelled like Exhaust " sniff sniff.........." LOL

Dude let me tell you, when Im trying to smell it and Rev up my engine and being that close to my Manifold without a HeatShield, it gets hot man. Oh Yeah.

Bad rep because I commented someone on their scientific scrutiny? LOL!

And, for those that have never heard of the "K.I.S.S. Principle," don't take it personal...LOL! Look it up.

HOLY HUMUNGO BALLS BATMAN....it works? Ok, so what is the downfall other than extremely bad gas mileage.....

Actually I get better gas mileage in the week since I have done this.
I can see no downside to this "mod". Even when it is hot the boost will alleviate itself via the spring loosing some of it's tensile strength. Consider it a type of "safety switch"
but when it is cold out boost easily reaches 10psi now.

it is strange cause it feels like it is pulling more than 7-8 psi

You're altering boost without a gauge? You have an extra motor in the garage?

Why yes i do, it reads 7-8 psi....... depending on the very slight spike....when it is cold......trust me i know what 10 plus psi does in our cars.....it usually hits the fuel cut before anything...I had a dialated wastegate so it boost 10 plus psi...which was usually followed by the hard fuel cut....it just feels unnatural what 2 more psi can do....

i can see this will be the next biggest thing on ebay...

10 dollars get 2 to 3 psi more

20 bucks shipping

well i had it for a week, probably the best...and cheapest mod yet......i am taking it off till i have mods to support it, it is a nice thing to install if you want more motive to hook these cars up.....

I think for a completely stock car it would be pretty safe to run 8psi daily. Someone chime in if I'm wrong.
