How-to: +2psi for a cheap $5

Yeah, then just let off the gas when you get where you want (naughty)

This is definately better than turning the rod, which I WAS contemplating. But I am a puss so I'm still @ stock boost 7.5psi wooohooo

stock boost at 7.5psi aint bad, im 7 stock, some people were like 5.5stock. (piss)

i know what he is doing, and its mostly used for the MSP because it comes stock turboed...

incase you didn't know my car is turboed as well. adjusting the wastegate when not using real programing/tunning for the car is PART of tuning it. it isn't a "lets unscrew this and call it a day" mod... i guess im just used to people tuning their cars correctly and getting them to run like they should.

and with this post im sure i pissed off at least 20 people... do i care? no because i drive a VW. (laugh)

I was just noticing your sig. Is there a recess or cut out for the VW emblem in your hood? Sorry it just stood out, I'd say the proper way to do that would be new grill and hood. :P

plus mbc and tuning costs more then 35 dollars....

but i like vdubs

no way, for a DIY person (or if you are really cheap) you can go to home depot and construct your own MBC from parts there (ok thats $10) then all the guages you should have anyways such as MBC and A/F you can tune it like that with an adjustable FPR (i dont know how much for Mazda, but i can get them for VW's for about $20.. then again i work there)

oh im not complainin. and no i didnt know i was just makin a statement. I have engine mgmt so i dont really care either. :)

What are you talking about? If you did this to a Vw it would throw an overboost code and cut the timing. You HAVE to tune the pcm on a Vw because it is a pcm controlled boost.

i have a filler peice but it looks like ass... plus im getting a CF hood for it some time soon anyways. so if it really bothers you that much i can photoshop it lol, but as for me i could care less. im sitting behind the wheel and dont have to look at it..

the stock grill has the VW logo in there and the hood is like that stock.

i know that, with a VW (as i stated before) all i would do is chip it with one of the many chipping companys out there, and then tweak the programing to get actually more performance out of it like if i used APR i would use V-tune or if i used REVO i would use the SPS...

for mazdas since they lack that kind of modability with out spending lots of $$ then tuning a MBC and wastegate along with all the fuel, its probably one of the better solutions out there.

one problem is in the first part of your write up you talk about two red circles...one is supposed to be blue but i dunno which one.

Sorry, I translated it late in the evening...

This is what Im doing?

Just caught wind of this and Im trying this out on Sat or Sun at a friends place. Thats all I wanted was a Few extra PSI. Nothing crazy and certainly no spiking. So Ill keep posted when its done.

Thanks for the tip. greatly appreciated.

No problem, but like I said in the how-to, this was not my idea, SoundTest did the testing and the how-to. I'm only the translator here!

BTW, SoundTest is really happy to see all the comments here.

Don't forget to actualy change your spark plugs if you up the boost. Else you could have detonation issues. (It's just a safety precaution)

stock 5 psi....hurray for cheap mods that i might try! (drunk)

Tank you for all your feedback! I run this mod, it gives me a stable 8psi without major peak like an MBC, I would have the money for the MBC, but this mod is safer since I do not have the temptation of getting more boost and then feel very very sorry to have such a stupid idea (too much boost -> zoom zoom boom club).

This mod is also invisible to dealers, if you remove the sring, for those who care about warranty. Adjusting wastegate actuator rod or installing a MBC can be spotted easily by the dealer, they wont tell you they found it, they'll take picture of it and put it in your file... when something will breake, they'll show you why you'll have to pay for those repairs! (no)

Have fun, and tune safely!

If you check out my sig, you'll see that I have taken a step-wise approach to modding my car. You'll also note that an MBC is not on the list of mods, although I do own a Joe P MBC. Next week my FMIC, plumbing ,and wideband will be installed. Shortly thereafter, the car will be tuned on the dyno. I have yet to play with the boost and I don't really have an interest in doing so until the car can properly support the added power. I think that it would be fair to say that I am taking a reasonable approach to tuning my car, other than the "lets unscrew this and call it a day" approach you describe of.

However, I see this as a totally legitimate way to incrementally increase the power through boost control. It makes no difference whether you internalize or externalize the spring. Both the MBC and this mod use the same principle to control the boost. The only significant difference is that the MBC uses the spring under compression while this mod uses the spring under tension. Same s***, different pile.

I hardly think that anyone doing this isn't doing a legitimate mod to their car. If you are aware of the limiations of this technique I see nothing wrong with using a cost-effective technique to achieve the same end that some knucklehead with deep pockets paid big bucks did. It doesn't have to have a name attached to it to make it something valid.

but you didant pay teh big bux for that wastegate spring and it was not made by mistar big name company so it must be crapp! oh noes!

alright well can't do this mod at school but seems legit so its possibly i'll try it when i get home. anyways, I wanted to make sure i knew what ends the springs attach to so can someone tell me if this is right, i had trouble figuring out from the pictures. i marked the spots i was thinking it was with and orange x and an orange circle

Yup, that's it.

I did this mod today w/ a different spring than what was shown. my boost now seems to come up quicker and stronger and it upped it a consistent 1 psi. seems to be a good mod IMO. thanks for the translation/thread speedbeaver

I also found it was easier to jack the car up to get to the wastegate where it connects to turbo and attach the spring w/ needle nose pliers. I could never seem to hook it how they show in the instructions
