How-to: +2psi for a cheap $5

well i had it for a week, probably the best...and cheapest mod yet......i am taking it off till i have mods to support it, it is a nice thing to install if you want more motive to hook these cars up.....

Exactly my thought. I just put on my CAI and GHL dp, then came across this little goody. Now, I am planning a custom FMIC.......I think I definately caught that damn bug.

Here is another tip, when you think you have the spring secured and you let go and its not:) it flew between the turbo and the block, so I jacked up the car and got right to it without problems...

I did not get the same response as Tim, but I did gain 1psi. It spikes to 8 and drops down to 7, I used to spike at 7 and drop to 6. Maybe mine is in a slighty different position or something....

Now I want an MBC, because wow what a difference 1psi makes....

You could cut some of the bent side off. That is how I gained like 2.5psi. Then just stretch a little more.

The spring mod is a very old trick. It's tried & true and it's mentioned in most books about turbos (like Corky Bell's). It's not about how it costs, but more about the results it gives. Tuning a MBC can be tricky at best with spikes and all (sometimes well over 2 psi) without mentioning that atmospheric conditions can play a role and make it inconsistent from day to day. The great advantage of this mod (besides warranty issues) is CONSISTENCY.

Some people seem to believe that if something doesn't cost much then it's not worth much. Someone ought to start a business and sell some chrome-plated springs with a nice logo on it and charge 100$ for it! And don't forget the famous "Dyno proven" thing!! I betcha some will cry for a GB on those!!

I'm sure someone would buy a "boost controller" spring with a velcroed logo over it.
Ebay that s***!!

hmm.. i might ebay this s***... 40 bucks for a "boost controller" i would get a turbo kit in no time.. lol

I want to try this out, someone earlier mentioned supporting mods and others say its safe for stock, so what I want to know, b/c I am paranoid about blowing my car up, I have 3" s-pipe back exhaust and cai, is this safe for those conditions? Honestly. I am up-grading SMIC and hardpipes when I have the $. I would like to play with this before then. What do you think? Scott

Anytime you mod the car you run the risk of blowing it up or cause some sort of damage. Others have just turned up the boost and been fine with no other mods. Some have blown stock. This spring only adds ~1-2 psi and no spiking! IMO you'd be fine. But upgrade that IC soon.

My car spikes about 1 psi at stock boost. No MBC, EBC, wastegate spring. Although 1psi more ain't a big deal when my boost is like 5.5-6psi. Try cruising in 4th gear at 4k rpm, then floor it all the sudden, it will jump up, then settle down a bit. I imagine it will get worse when I add exhaust and increase boost though.

hmmm i think i have the slowest protege... i spike at 5.5 and then bleed off to about 5. god i suck, might try this mod out when i get home, haven't decided yet.

Hahaha! I'm better than you, I run 5.8 and falling off to 5. But I do have an ebc which sometimes I turn on to run 8 psi on low boost. But for the most part I run stock. J/k about the better than you part. These cars are so inconsistent it's not even funny. You can say that you run stock boost and you could be anywhere from 4.5 - 7.5 psi!

But I may still try this mod even with my ebc.

I used to spike fairly often to 9psi then drop to 7.5 to redline. With this spring i hold a steady 9.5, spiking only to 10. When it's colder I hold 10psi all day long.

ok guys help me out, I was looking at this today, bought the springs, but I ran out of light to play with the install. Am I hooking the spring on the bolt that connects the control arm to the valve lever or to the lever itself? Also for those that went under the car, can you get to the lever really that easy, because up above was pretty hard for the 10 minutes I fiddled with it? Thanks ahead, Scott.

I Only went under the car when my dumb ass let go of the spring and it shot between the block and turbo:) I hooked it onto the "brass" color lever and the arm connects to. You can just barely see the corner of it if you slide the heat shield back some (No need to pull the O2, just take off the bolts and tip it back some. I also found it easier to use my hand then the pliers, just cause I did not have room for the pliers.

also when you think it should have connected, move it just a little further back and it will lock on. Your eyes play tricks when you can't see where it actually ends.

The term we use locally is jerry-rigged. If people are too cheap to buy a MBC, they should not buy a turbo car and want to mod it. Hell you can even make a cheap MBC with Swagelok parts. That would be much-less rigged, and much more functional. If your mod works, then it works, I just don't know if its "how-to" worthy. Kinda like:

"How-To keep your MSP lip and ground effects from falling off"

Buy duct tape from your local hardware store part # 123xyz
Tape the top of the ground effects to the car.

It works...... but looks like s*** and once the tape goes bad or falls off then it wont work.

Functionality is only one factor for the how-to section. Quality and reliability are the others. Sorry to knock it man.... good pics and all, decent instructions, just not a good mod by any means.

(flame2) LMAO!!!

If we are going as far as to add springs to the wastegate, why not just do this? (see link). I haven't done it myself because I bought the MBC before I saw it, but what is the deal?

Seems like this should have put Joe P out of business LOL!

Blkzoomzoom's way is a bit more involved and noticeable if you should happen to need a trip to the dealer.

I have some 90* needle-nose pliers that worked VERY well!

damn you where was this thread when i tore apart every ball point pen i could find to get the right spring for my mbc
