how slow is your p 5

I dont get this...
Everyone says that the P5 is so slow...
Is my P5 not stock?
From the stop light i can beat almost any B-swapped civic, its def faster than my turbo (yes turbo) grand prix, and once i hit 3rd gear i can keep up with my friends v6 mustangs. Then i hit forth gear and i wonder what the hell happend lol.
Anyways... To me this is not a slow car and honestly the torque suprises anyone who gets in my car.
What gives?

Is your's a turbo swap by chance? I can keep up with my NA, but my car won't be happy about it, and the only thing I've done performance-wise is a 4-1 header. I think the last stat I saw was that 0-60 takes over 10 seconds in a P5 (although who really cares about those?). Then again, it depends on how good you have been about maintenance.

Most folks get overwhelmed by the work needed to swap the 2.0 out and the KL 2.5 in. Sure.... it's alot of work - I won't lead anyone on about it. The motor and trans drop right in, the ecu just needs 4 other external wires to get it power and grounds, and the thing just... runs. It's worked for me - cured my problem of a lack in power.

Most won't ever do it. Some will push their 2.0's further than I have pushed my 2.5 - but it's all in the name of the game and how much you love your car. I wanted more NA power than I could see my 2.0 making - so I got it. Hell.... I drove mine for almost 2 years with that 2.0 turd in it. Blew that one trying to get minimal gains out of it, swapped in another - blew that one the same exact way. cylinders 2 & 3 gave birth to their internals through the block. After swapping the KL in - no rod bearing soup in NA form. No knocks. No issues. It just ran forever and would've continued, had I properly tuned it for boost when I tossed the snail setup on it. That was the first issue I ever had from the KL - and that was MY doing.

Goes to show - you can have 3 types of work:
fast
good
cheap

But.... you can only have any combination of 2.

It's boosted kl swapped or you're full of it. My 85 hp 87 b2200 is faster than my mp3 was

Kikk - in stock form - not happening sir. A b-swapped civic/teg will wax a p5 - stock for stock.

Its def not swapped. And im not car illiterate by any means.
I was wondering if it was running lower or high compression ect if it would be able to do what its doing on forged internals.
I can tell you that it deff doesn't take 10 seconds to hit 60 either. Im going to time it tomorrow morning.
I did get walked by my dads 5.0 swapped Volvo wagon last night tho. When i originally purchased the car it had a half hooked up methanol kit on it which the dealer removed... so that tells me some unseen things are going on. AND like i said... once i hit fourth gear all this magic is gone. So whatever keeps up with me to fourth gear quickly passes at that point. Motor says FS9 on it.
I can see that it has headers, straight cat-less w/ no muffler exhaust, There was a receipt for a Computer swap in the glove compartment (?), obviously the meth kit (at one point), and short ram air, o and i can tell for sure the LSD is welded or something :/

The FS9 is just another name for the FS-ZE I believe (I may be wrong since im new to Mazda motors). So in that case you'd have a bump over a stock FS-DE that USDM P5's have. The FS-ZE was rated at 170 bhp compared to the DE's 130.

Well, you've pointed out a quite a few mods that suggest there are many more you don't know about. Who would lock the differential of this car without giving it more power? Traction is certainly not an issue with the stock engine except in wet conditions where you wouldn't want a locked differential anyway.

Mine is slow when it runs well and even slower when it doesn't. I have trouble keeping up with stop and go freeway traffic. And I really have to give it hell to pull out into busy traffic. I don't understand why this car wasn't given more power.

is it a 5 spd manual or a 4spd auto? my 5spd manual is decent. its got a lot of pep for a 4cylinder n/a i call er the v6 hunter bc i romp gm's and ford v6 mustang and camaro plus v6 gand ams and the like that are suppose to be "fast" or "sporty" but are mediocre when a 2.0 i4 hatch back with a bit of factory tuning and a kand n filter drop in can romp them. example a grand am gt v6 was having road rage issues and i decided to take off n not deal with him so i did just that he tried to keep up, could not

Not buying it. Were they all towing U-hauls? In a controlled environment (not an "I got a jump on him, and he couldn't catch up" scenario) this engine isn't tearing up any V6.

I call bs too. There's no way these cars could beat anything with more cylinders. They're down on power for 4 cylinders, and while they are light it's not enough to take down V6s. Especially Mustangs and Camaro's where, while they weren't made for speed, aren't dogs either.

I feel like in the majority of street racing stories, it's only the forum member who was aware that they were even racing.

3.1 grand am is slow as s*** that's not even a race

3.8 gm motor will wax a 4.6 mustangs ass and definitely a protege

V6 mustang was barely faster than my mp3

My guess is it's far from stock. And probably tuned as well. If it is an fsze it's probably around 180-185 chp with the mods you listed but I doubt this due to the fact that it was runing a meth setup. If compression was changed it was lowered

Check your oil pan to see if it was tapped for an oil return

Faster than a 2002 4cyl tiburon but slower than a 2001 2.0 jetta (due to gearing).

Heh. Quick enough, it's all about knowing where to put that rev needle too.

As far as issues keeping up with stop and go traffic or getting away/around someone... not a one. Blast to drive, and it can only get quicker. Although, I wouldn't mind larger brakes for when I have 4 adults in the car.

Really? I had to get a runing start to pass people...

You guys need to drive faster cars then compare. Brakes were good enough to lock up 215-50-17 neo gens. The only reason to upgrade is for looks. Handling braking and ride quality were great but that's it

Mine is so slow that people pass me up walking............................when parked or waiting for the light to change. I race people on bicycles all the time (on a closed course of course)....and win! I can embarass so so many asshats who want to play stupid road games that doesn't involve top speed so I don't care if people think it's just a slow wagon thing, advantage me. It keeps me entertained, it gets 31 mpg even being sportauto with 100k on the clock & will pony up on the limiter in open stretches effortlessly. No one has the fastest car on the planet and no one has the fastest car in every situation but yeah, these are slow POS's compared to lots of cars & lots of cars are slow POS's compared to these.

I still stand by my previous statement - my p5 in 4-cylinder form - was slow. The reason I can say that without any doubt - is because it was.

It did get better when I boosted the 4-banger, but that didn't last very long at all and soon after gave birth to it's internals to make them externals.

Now that I've driven the car in several forms..... at several levels..... 4-cylinder without extensive work isn't really quick. It may beat a wheelchair, a bicycle, a d16y7 civic with 4 passengers..... you get the point.

If you want a fast car - it takes 1 of 2 things - money to dump into your p5 - or just buy another car.

this car is quick on its feet as luken10 said you have to use powerband correctly, i was going 62ish in 5th when that (obviously, well hopefully 4 him automatic) v6 grand am started messing with me, he got in front and slammed brakes so i did same to him and before he could do it again(all that at 65ish mph and a clutch with a failing throwout bearing) i dropped to 4th and took off on his a$$. got to 107 and let off to slow for my exit he was tryin to catch me because he took off as well i could hear his engine when i took off, but i exited at the exit i needed before he could do anything. its no fire breather or muscle car but its a decent stock platform for a decently fast tuner car if you so choose

Why do you consider the P5 a 'tuner' car? To my knowledge, there is no software or equipment that permits tuning of the P5 ECU. I would love it if there were because the P5 is still one of my favorite cars (other than its propensity to rust up here!).

That's not really what he meant by tuner car, but there are options for that, although not really necessary until you boost your p5.

As for how slow they are, my stock p5 keeps up with the usual crowd of heavy footed SUV drivers. Pulled with a nissan murano off the line quite nicely recently!
