131 WHP you ain't got. Mazda claims of 130 are flywheel HP under virtually lab settings--perfect atmospherics, perfect mixture, perfect timing, etc. Thought I'd pass along some real P5 NA numbers that will be improved upon shortly. The car has 6000 miles on the clock.
Ran a dyno check couple of weeks ago on my P5--Injen CIA, MagnaFlow CB--and came up with 104 WHP, 115 lbs/ft of torque. Three pulls came on a DynoJet chassis dyno at MAC Sport in Parker, Colorado. Dyno is corrected for altitude of 5300 feet and is adjusted automatically for temp and humidity before a run of three pulls.
These numbers are my baseline, since I didn't dyno the car before I installed the CIA and CB, but I assume the readouts would have been less. How much less is open to argument. Regardless of manufacturer dyno readouts on CIAs, CBs, headers, cams, etc., what you see on a properly set up and maintained chassis dyno is what you get--no maybes, no bulls***.
One thing that stood out--the engine went rich on all pulls in 3rd gear at about 3800, from a reading of around 14.2-3 to 12+. ECU is the problem. Doing some checking, I found that the MP3 chip should cure that. This means a leaner, more perfect mixture at higher revs (want to hit 14.1:1 or as close as possible throughout the range to 6500). Problem is, find the chip. Dealers don't stock 'em.
Have an EssentialSPEED overbored TB and shorty bundle of snakes tuned header ordered, and am looking at a pair of MazdaSpeed cams--unless I decide to get the intake only and switch the stock P5 intake to the exhaust side. Some issues apparently have come up with j-spec exhaust/intake combo--lumpy idle, possible emissions problems, etc., although one of our clan says the pair are excellent performers.
I'll pull a dyno run after each mod is installed and keep you all up to date on numbers. You might find them valuable.
What are your opinions on an AEM intake and Racing Beat exhaust combo? Sorry, not trying to threadjack just curious if anybody has experience w/this. Thanks!
I got the P5 Injen CIA and the MagnaFlow CB in a package for $531 plus shipping from P-Tuning http://www.ptuning.com/.
The install for each is simple. It took me about 45 minutes to put the CIA in the car and I was wasting time doing it. The CB fits perfectly and takes about 20 minutes if you have access to a rack. Muffler shops charge anywhere from $75-100 around Denver to install. The sound is a deep, mellow purr and unlikely to attract the gestapo.
BTW, for all of you who installed the CIA in the P5, check your local auto trim shop for a piece of contoured sponge weatherstrip that's grooved on both sides. Cut it to fit around the intake pipe and push it down snugly around the pipe where the pipe goes into wheel well. Make sure it seats around the hole punched into the well. This really finishes the installation cosmetically and looks most professional. It also cuts down a bit on intake moan for those who aren't into max noise from engine/exhaust.
Some guys like 3" exhaust pipes. Be careful here--the bigger the pipe, the more it can affect the low end. Just hanging pipe and headers on an engine without researching performance parameters can cause heartburn...
