I keep seeing threads where people are either getting a different car or a newer CX5 and was curious about how many people have traded in their CX5 already or are planning to do so.

Reason why I financed it was to give me the option to trade it in without much loss. There is no doubt that I want the SkyActiv-D. Chances are I'll go for a mid-cycle revision model with the diesel. Don't get me wrong though, I am very happy with my fully loaded 2.0 CX-5.

I'm a bit confused. Doesn't it just 'feel' like less of a loss since it gets worked into the monthly payments and the payments get stretched out longer?

The total purchase price of both cars stays the same as does the depreciation. And in some states the full sales tax on the full price of both purchases still applies.

So for example: after 2 years a with a 5 year loan on the first car with 3 years left it gets traded in for what is left on the loan and the payments stay close to what they were for the new car but start over again with 5 years. So for the last two years it would have been payment free if you were still driving the first car for all 7 years.

using rough numbers:
28,000 car
+ 2,000 in tax
30,000 paid

22,000 trade in
29,000 new car
2,000 in tax

ends up being $9,000 more than keeping the first car (not counting any interest)

Even though this is my wife's car I enjoy driving it. My ride is a 2011 3 series which obviously has more power and handles better, but Mazda did a great job with the 2.5 as it has plenty of power and handling for spirited driving with the added bonus of cargo capability. We keep cars for at least 10 years so not even the thought of trading.
