how many of you honestly grinded 2nd

Funny thing this grinding but I've done it too. Every so often when you're pushing it as others have said but it also used to happen with normal driving.

However it seems what others have done that helped was switching out the tranny oil to Redline MT90. I did that and it is rare that I grind now.

Maybe that would help in your case too?

i have most definetly done it..only like twice..and both times..it was me pulling hard out of wendys in front of a bunch of ricers..damnit i felt stupid..

doesn't that count as abuse tho? they'd be able to tell

do they actually cover that ?

well im almost 100% sure that there is no harm in doing this once in a while as an acident...and they wont be able to tell eather, becouse once one thing explodes/breakes it causes a chain reaction most of the time and u end up having to replace most of the tranny...
my friend and I where in a gravil pit doing doughnuts and powerslides in his WRX and broke 1st gear, and gecouse of the 1st breaking it broke 2nd 3rd and 5th and the shift fork just becouse there whas s*** in there flying all over the place, and he got it covered under waranty(3 days after we broke his rear diff.)

I haven't done it in that particular way, but I did grind a gear or two under different conditions. Mainly due to impatience or not paying attention. Or just a brain blip.

As they say "Grind 'em 'til ya find 'em" :D

I used to do it quite a bit. I'm one of them that switched to Redline MT90 and haven't done it since.

I'm extremely please with the results as I'm sure you would too.

Exactly. I did it alot with the stock fluid but since I've put GM Syncromesh in, I have yet to grind a gear other than reverse once.

where can i get that.. and how much

I grind second when I shift too fast. I now know that 2nd takes a bit longer to shift into. But it's not like the grind when you let up on the clutch and miss it completely. It grinds for half a second while slipping into second. I don't know cars, but when I heard this, I knew not to do it anymore. So I taught myself not to shift into second so fast.

Yeah, this is my first manual tranny car, but I learned to drive on a Mini Cooper (sooo smoooooth! :D) and a Honduh Civic, but I have never grinded 2nd. It sucks because it does take an extra second or so to do the 1st to 2nd tango - I bought a short shifter and am unsure if that will help alleviate it any (anyone offer commentary on that - s.s. speeding up the 1st to 2nd shift?). Either way, I've just gotten used to not shifting too fast from 1st to 2nd.

People that are behind me that want to save a second from their measly lives due to my "slow shift" when leaving a light can refer to my middle finger for resolution......thank you! :D

Most performance shops carry Redline products. If not, do a search to some of the advertisement links on this message board. I have also heard many good things about the GM Syncromesh.

Hate to do this, but people are saying they 'grinded' a gear. Didn't you really 'ground' or 'grind' it? As in, "man I ground 2nd gear today" or "if I grind 2nd, will my car be hosed?"

Sorry, but to my ears it sounds as bad as a missed shift.

hrmm, i get that god awful noise when i try to chirp second. my car doesnt even try to chirp second anymore and that really really sucks. i dont know what the deal is with it. it seems that everytime i run up to about 28-30 miles per hour in first and try to hit second real quick for the chirp it never does it, and it just makes a KEeerupPP noise and pisses me off. GRRR. so my near future mods are a lightened flywheel, performance clutch, and a msp shift fork

yea its happened to me because i drive it like i did my 3000gt and its NOT.. but the new SS by kartboy has elimated the 30 foot distance between gears so my fast shifting has been compensated.

funny this only happens to people when they shift at high revs.

mine only grinds whne I shift in low reves, below 3000rpm, and only when the car isn't warmed up....
somethings f*ucked up... but I hope changing the trans fluid will work

No, this is happening to many others at lower RPMs too. I was one of them and Redline solved that problem.
