i don't always do this cuz i know our cars aren't built for this, but i was in first gear @5000 rpm and pulled to 2nd.. i probably didnt have the clutch in all the way, and i grinded 2nd gear.. really bad sound and feeling

so, how many of you honestly grinded 2nd gear when pushing your car?

were you looking at your sig while driving? that may have been the problem :D

never grinded a gear while pushing it. though my friend has done it a couple of times in his 200sx. tranny still works fine. shouldn't be something to worry about unless you start grinding a bunch for some reason...

Issue 1 - Grinding 2nd Gear - Ive done it once driving hard and all I could think was . . . (hand)

Issue 2 - Your Sig - (yippy)

can someone explain to me what grinding in 2nd can really do?

and is it just my car or is it normal that it's harder to pull into 2nd when @high rpms?

thanks for the sig compliments

it can mess up the syncro's to second gear, hold the clutch alittle longer, make sure you feel it go into gear before you start letting off, what I have seen some people do is they are letting off the clutch as they are pulling the shifter back and they dont even know it

the shift to second takes a split second longer than any other shift, and yeah make sure you keep the clutch down. i used to have that problem and i was lifting up too early.

give it some more practice giving it a half second longer than any other shift.

thanks for the reply's

it's tough though to pull into 2nd, not smooth at all.. gotta use more umphh

i'll keep practicing

yeap, that's one of the characteristics of our cars.

it seems to be common in cars tho...i was driving my bro-in-law's S4 the other day (drooooool...) and it was harder to go 1-2 at high revs also.

it happened to me to..i accellerated to about 5krpm and tried to shift into 2nd gear...*roaaaaaaaar*
that sound went right through my bones... damn

lol i dont have that problem cause im used to drivin a z3 and that clutch is stiff its just a tad easy then a cable clutch and when i first got into my car i can just pretty mutch throw the stick in gear for how easy it is lol

I have the same problem. it happens to me more ofter than I would like,

I fing it hard to drop my car into second compared to the other gears, and every other car I have driven.

in My 94 civic I didnt even need to use the clutch if I kept the revs in the right spot.

could never do this in my 5.

I've been driving a stick for 19 years and I have done it twice in the 3 weeks I have owned my P5. I think it is because I am trying to shift too fast and the clutch has a little longer reach than I am used to.

I've done it like twice, my wife ground the hell out of it the second time I let her drive it-which was for me to hear the new HKS exhaust. All I heard was grinding.(argh)

Same thing here. I've had the car about 2 months and I've done it 3-4 times. I've been driving standard cars/trucks for 11 years, and in all those years I didn't grind more than 3-4 times.

Now that I have my kartboy shifter/bushings, I find it SOO much harder to shift into 2nd. When I put my stock back on, it was so easy since the shifter was so much higher and it had more leverage to shift.

I've grinded like 3 times in the 6ish months i've had the car...

lol ive done that a time or so when i first got it, i grinded. I was used to my civics loose clutch. Now, I dont grind, just shift a lil slower and push harder into 2nd.

I find that the only way to get into second smoothly is to either shift at very low speed/rpm (like shifting to second at around 5km/h) or shifting quickly right at 4.5k RPM's. At 4500 I can put it into second, engage the clutch, then hit the gas smooth as silk...
