only reason i'm not fond of jl is because they are the flavor of the month ;)
Still not a good reason.. and flavor of the month.. they have been around and popular for a long time. way more than a month..

I agree I dont like doing what everyone else is doing. but when you dont hvae the money to try 25 differetn setups. and you want something that is going ot sound good. JL is there for ya. they have the reputation and the product to back it up.

Can you swap sub speaker using regular factory box? ie 8" for a 10"(scratch)
So you want to use the factory MSP box, but put a 10" in there??? you would have to customize the box if that is even possible.. I live here in hick town USA in Indiana. so I have not got to even see a MSP yet. so I dont know if the box is even big enough for a 10". if it was even possible it would be the same amout of work to build a new box that woudl sound 100x better. bad idea. if you really want to change the sub and use the factory box use a better 8in sub.

Why not go with an Adire Audio Shiva ($125) and either a JBL 600.1 (fairly cheap) or a Alpine M350 Class D.

There's soo man y options out there. JL makes amazing products, but you pay for them. Their amps are really quite good. Eclipse makes good stuff...less than JL, but awesome SQ and can still thump. eD makes a solid product for less money, but you have to be willing to buy online. That goes the same for Image Dynamics...

by the way...sndsgood...nice joke with the JL flavor of the week thing! :p

most people think i have 2 10" subs, but i only have 1 12"
ya know, i hate when people say that. it could take 4 crappy subs to equal 1 great sub of the same size. and most know how much i preach that it's more the box than the sub;)

roflmao, that was great. lol, i think they've been the flavor for what, a decade?(uhm)

did no one click my link hah ive seen this thing in action its sick a jugger and a class d matts haha its carazzzayyyy

to me they are the flavor of the month, ive been in this hobby for going on 15 years now, and about every 3-4 years you have a new top dog so to speak. it was sony then alpine then soundstream, then ppi then kicker image dynamics then rockford, then jl now it seems to be going the route of ed. just trends you start to see over a long period of time. nothing against jl as a company. manville smith has helped me out on a few occasions and i used to run their subs around 8 years ago. but i tend to suggest products that arnt in every other kids trunk up and down the street, i kind of like it when i tell someone i'm running image dynamics, and they get confused and assume its some flea market brand because they have no clue. i tend to go for that. but hey even image was the flavor of the month a few years back lol.

and whoever said : people think i have 2-10's but i only have 1-12"

um the diffrence in spl between the two is maybe a couple of db's so there really isnt much diffrence between 2-10's or 1-12

I see what you mean....I'm fairly new to this. It's really only in the past year that I've learned that Crutchfield isn't DIY's best friend. It's thanks to the guys on here that I even know about ID, eD, Adire, RE, PG, etc, and hell...even JL and Eclipse. My previous view on things was that Crutchfield carried some good stuff...which really isn't the case.

It's hard to think of Sony as ever being considered one of the best in 12V audio, though...man they've fallen. Kinda the same deal with Soundstream and PPI. It seems like ID's 15min. in the spotlight have ended to some extent, but they're still making quality pieces. I can only hope that most companies can continure to do that!

AS for that thread, Wakey...very nice find. It's all very true. Biggest gripes with JL are the initial costs and their popularity. A few years ago it seemed like every baller was using Eclipse subs...So I understand the flavor of the month comment better, now. :)

I am sorry, but I am still not buying the flavor of the month comment. JL as always been good and popular. I know alot of people that were running JL stuff way back. and now they have newer stuff that looks better and sounds better. even more reason to want their stuff. I read some of that thread. Everyone says they dont want JL cause everyone has it. NO one could ever say that JL sucked. not one person said that. just that you could get other stuff cheaper (and if you knew what you were doing could make it sound good). People that are not into audio dont want to dick with it. they just want to sound good and look good. you will always have that. the company that no one has ever heard of cant come out with a sub that cost 800 bucks. people woudl be like "mutha ****** you outta yo mind." I dotn like to be like eveyrone else. and I dont think most of the people on this site dont want to be like everyone else.. that is why we drive proteges and not honda's. are cars = awesome. So does that mean I shoudl not buy one cause someone else was driving one.. NO. **** what everyone else has. If I want a good product then I will buy a good product. I cant wait till I get out of school and ahve the money to test different subs, but for now I can only afford one sub. So I got one that I know will sound good. It looks awesome and dont require a s*** ton of power even in a small box (I am sure the box can be better but it works and sounds great and I only had to build it once)

Sorry for the rant guys. I just dont like the JL bashing. Bottom Line.. JL makes good s***.. everyone knows it.. and they can hate all they want, but if you want somethign reliable JL has that reputation cause they have earned it.

sorry for who evers thread got jacked.

JL has always put out a good product, but the flavor of the month comment had good backing. it's how the audio community is. the W7 was one of the most highly anticipated new products in the past decade. their W6's were regarded as awesome subs in the competition community, but didn't get a ton of publicity back in the day. i believe 1stmp3 said they've won the most trophies, which i don't doubt, but they still don't have the same wow factor as the W7's. unforutunately i wasn't around for the really great days of rockford and stillwater designs. having a great product and having the extreme popularity are 2 different things. there are many great products that don't get the recognition the W7 does. i'll be the first to admit JL did an awesome job on that sub. but it took almost a decade to design, from what i heard. while JL has been a well known company that has always put out awesome products, they did not used to be nearly as popular as they have been in the past 5 or so years. and they keep gaining popularity, as well as s*** talking haters. i do love their equipment, i just won't spend the money on it;)

The guy at my local sound shop has known the JL people since about 1984... from back when they used to sell speakers out of the back of a truck. In fact he was the 7th vendor for them. Now I personally don't have any proof to bash JL because I'm not exactly an audio expert... but I listen to the things this guy says because he's pretty much the smartest guy I know, and he definately knows his s***. He got my turbo timer and aftermarket alarm to work together... and I think I was pretty much the 2nd person on this forum to have it work correctly. Wow I hate making posts as soon as I wake up because they never make sense. Basically what I'm trying to say is, this guy is smart.. and knows pretty much everything about audio, and if he can easily give me a couple of reasons that IDmax is better than JL Audio W7's... then I pretty much assume that IDmax is better.

funny, cause all the judges for stereo competitions seem to think the W7 is better. the guy might know his s***, and there might be certain aspects of the IDMAX that are better than the W7, but that doesn't make it an all around better sub. look at the brahma. flatter BL curve and higher power handling, not to mention shorter mounting depth. does that make it superior to the W7? no. but does it hold it's own against a W7, in many opinions, including my own, yes. same with the IDMAX. it will hold it's own against the W7. also keep in mind that much of which sub is better and what not is opinionated. the bottom line is that the install is still more important than the sub, when you are comparing the top ranked SQ subs.
