How do you know when to change the clutch?

if when you push the clutch in and it stays on the floor, probably need to change it. no need to change it until it stops working. my moms previous mazda went 250K+ miles with no problems on the clutch before somebody totaled it. her 00 protege has 175K+ miles and the clutch is still going

I knew mine was going out when I was on the freeway in 5th trying to pass someone and my rpm's would run up to 5k with no change in acceleration. Mine has always been a bit odd though compared to the LX, plus I do one heck of a lot of short, city driving with lots and lots of shifting. Clutch was replaced at 80k. After it was out, we saw that the the clutch plate was worn the rivets which were starting to get polished! The LX is at 78k and going strong and our old MX6 gave up the ghost at 250k with it's original clutch still in it, which frankly impressed me to no end.

the whole rpms goes up and speed doesn nothing is the major indicator or major slippage......

a clutch engaging sooner or later has NOTHING to do with its wear. its adjustable. look at the pedal in the back, theres a big bolt going from the pedal into he engine bay (it called the master cylinder) you can adjust the nut that connects it to the pedal, but be warned doing this the wrong way can lead to continuous wear on the clutch for example if you make it so the clutch engages really late, it could be not fully disengaged when the pedal is all the way out, thus causing it to wear while driving "in gear". a good way to check is throw it in 4th gear while stopped and try to go. if the car studders for a few seconds and tries to go, rpm goes up while clutch pedal is all the way out, its slippage. if it dies right away without rpm going up your good. be warned doing this too much will ruin your clutch. i know this from experiance, i have replaced my master and slave cylinder and have done a buttload of research about clutches because of my last car.
