Many thanks to Edwin Man aka theMAN for posting Mazda Tech Service Bulletins on his website:

http://web2.airmail.net/emann/protegefaq/tsb/

Mazda North America has bulletins on a number of the problems we have "discovered" as owners. (They even mention the @#$% rust on the rotor hubs!)

Check out TSB MT000003848 "Clutch Chatter During Cold Takeoff" for Gen3 Proteges!

So does this mean that we can go to the dealer and get a new clutch setup?I do get some chatter when it is cold, but then goes away after it is run for alittle while.is anyone gonna go in and get this done anytime soon? Also if I do take it in should I remove my intake and kartboy stuff??so they dont blame it on these things and void my warranty. I take my car the Mazda of Great Neck witch is in Long Island Ny and they are a very cool place to have your mazda serviced. I am just wondering what all you guys are gonna do. Pete

MODS:
custom polished intake with K&N
kartboy shifter,bushings and knob
carbon fiber altezzas----back ordered

I never noticed these bulletins. I need to get the rust on my hubs fixed before I run out of warranty. Hey thanks for post. Glad to hear they are addressing your issues on the clutch its about time!

Excuse my ignorance, but is this like a recall? I believe that my MP3 is still under warrenty (I bought it used), so I want to get all the warrenty work done before I do any modding. If you know anything more about this please give me more info. I live about 45 miles from my nearest Mazda dealer, so I want to take it in and get as much done as possible. I have 15,000 miles on it, and haven't had anything worked on yet.......so what should I ask for? ;) Thanks in advance.

Wow...thats pretty interesting. Whenever the temperature is below about 40 degrees F outside my clutch will chatter like this. It grabs like my Centerforce clutch used to in my RX7. After the car warms up the clutch engages just fine and is smooth. The problem really doesn't bother me too much, and honestly i'm not too crazy about the dealer tearing apart my car. I'd rather just replace the clutch myself. The only time this grabby clutch is a problem is when the road is wet or slick.

What is this Clutch chatter and how do I know if I have it? Maybe I have it and I jsut think its normal (right along with the squeeks, clunks, boom, bangs, etc.)

TSB on the Protege5 roof rack whistle, too :)

I don't use the roof rack but I might have to look into that. I'd rather have it on and quiet than off and quiet. Unfortunately, I did not think that was a choice before.

Let me try to explain the clutch chatter a little better....Clutch chatter is basically when you let off the clutch and when it's getting ready to engage, you feel a pulsation coming from the drivetrain. The car doesn't jump, the engagement just feels harsh and will cause wheel spin on slippery surfaces. In my protege I notice it more when it is cold outside. My assumption is that Mazda used some type of lining on the clutch that is a little more aggressive to improve it's longevity. Instead of the clutch having more slippage, it engages quicker and faster, increasing the chatter.

I was browsing through that site and wow. It is very informative and all the information seems to be up to date, current, and accurate. Some should shoot who ever made that site a line and tell them they did a hell of a job. (thumb)

lol.. and this whole time i thought it was because my alignment was off or because they fuct my tranny when they serviced it...

Edwin has had that site up for awhile now. I mention it in the article I wrote for GRM...Actually that gave him the motivation to do the recent updates that are on there now.

its just too bad the server is soooooo slllooooowwwwwwwwww...

umm... enry.... i think we may have a worthy candidate for you to host... whaddya say??

URL for clutch TSB

I occasionally have the clutch chatter problem in my '02 P5, although I would call it a shudder.

I've clicked the URL for the TSB:(http://web2.airmail.net/emann/protegefaq/tsb/) in several posts to get a copy, but my browser always comes back with "Page Cannot Be Found."

Anyone know another link? I really want to fix this without shelling out $$$.

Thanks,
Rusty

yea it appears the site is down!
Hopefully it well be back up before i go into the dealership on friday for yet another bushing replacement (having the E's put on), i will have them do this as well. Ill give u guys an update as to if it works or not, being as its like 30-40 degree weather here all the time now :(

I just had the clutch chatter prob fixed at my local dealer. They replaced the flywheel, pressure plate and throw-out bearing. Car used to feel like a bucking bronco in the mornings, or even worse, when I was coming up to a red light in second gear slowing down, then the light turns green.......as I gave it gas the car would buck. I was going a little too fast for 1st gear, and at the time I thought too slow for 2nd gear.....now I have no probs at all with the clutch. Feels better than when I bought the car:D

are you saying the bucking encountered at slow speeds is a result of clutch chatter? i always thought clutch chatter only happend when taking-off from a stand still. i HATE the "bucking bronco" feeling when accelerating from slow speeds, though it's perfectly smooth when starting from a stop.

No that is not the "clutch chatter" that is just our bad motor mounts showing us exactly how bad they are.
