High Idle??

When I started my car this morning, it idled at 1500, I revved the engine a little, but it stayed the same. So, I went ahead and just drove it over to my Grandparents house, and it was still a little over 1000 when I stopped. I left my engine running and when I came out it was about 1000. Anyone having any idle problems. It was a little bit more cold this morning then it has been.

man you better get that checked out either you have a stuffed up muffler or something worse is yet to come...

Reset the computer. Mine did this, no idea why. It's actually starting to creep back up again since it's colder. Just pull of the battery terminal. wait about 10 minutes, or touch the wires together to drain any charge from caps, and re-connect. Should take care of it.

High idle is normal when you just started the car and it's cold. Any mechanics in here?

yeah but he was talking about when it was still idling high he had drove it pretty far so it couldnt have been because it was still cold .. :D

Mine idles really funny, too. I have my 6000 mile check with Mazda on the 28th (oops, I have 8500+ miles? oh well) so I'll get it looked at then..

But I know what you're talking about.. mine idles anywhere between 1500 and near-stalling. x_X I dislike it.

my mx6 would idle between like 700 and stalling. i adjust the idle spped, reset the computer and neither did jack s***, so ...i traded it in on a mp3!heehee( they blew out the clutch two days later) ;)

My car does the same thing. Just let it sit for a few minutes, and it goes back down to below 1k. This is what happens to me.

Yeah, it just does it when I first start the car and it was like 26 degrees here this morning. I will ask Mazda about it, and get them to check it out when I go in for my next oil change.

My engine idled up to 1500 when it is in cold weather too. This may help the engine to warm faster.
Since it happens to my friend's GT-S too, and he idled up to 1800-2000.

I usually warm my car 5 mins before, and it will drop below 1000.

Totally normal. My car was at about 1700RPMs this morning (oh about 12 degrees out). This car does it, my girl's old '90 MX-6 did it, my dad's '88 Corolla did it. Don't sweat it!

Initially my p5 idles at almost 1500, then drops to about 800. What gets me is if I push in the brakes, the idle jumps to 1250. :wtf: Any one know why. It has been kinda cold in texas, but ive let the car warm up. I also have an injen intake, checked for any loose ends. None were found. Reset the ecu 2. Ive gotten 3 CEL which have all gone away. I told my car couple choice words and the cel on the 3rd time went away.

my car tries to die on me, it idles at 600rpm and every few second dips to about 350 and then levels back out at 600 i mentioned to mazda and they said its normal.

Mine idled at 1500 for three minutes then went back down under 1000 RPM's. It is cold here in MN. Just to follow up.

idle stuff

If your idle is fluctuating a lot (apart from the cold) and possibly dying, it could be a the idle air control valve. I had a probe with a dirty idle air control valve, it causes lots of idling problems because it gets stuck. I assume that the little cylinder on the throttle body is it. It was on the probe (pretty much the same engine). Cleaning that might fix it.
