i was wondering if anyone has or knows how to modify the wiring so that when you switch to the high beams, the low beams stay on as well. any speculation as to why mazda didnt produce the headlights to function like this in the first place?

thanx

cause one is for highbeam and other is for high......seriously that topic has never been brought, atleast i dont think, would be nice to know....you could do a trial and error i guess....

you can turn both on at the same time if you position the switch right inbetween high and low, but i would like a more permanent solution.

In a P5 with seperate bulbs for high/low beams (H7), this wouldn't be a problem. However, in an sedan you probably wouldn't want to do this because both filaments would be on inside a single bulb (H4) and it wasn't designed for twice the normal amount of heat. The life of the bulb would be severely shortened.

not to mention no headlight regulations anywhere in the world allow for both filaments to be lit up at the same time in a dual filament headlight bulb... let's not forget the additional electrical load on the wiring itself... can anyone say "fire" like beavis does? ;)

and what does this thread have to do with engine/suspension/braking performance? ;)

I've done this mod on several older model motorcycles that run a single H4 headlight. I've never had it cause any problems with wiring, heat, or bulb life...but you must consider that the motorcycles don't get as much daily use as cars. I'm looking into setting up my Pro5 to have both bulbs on at once. In the Pro5's dual bulb setup I don't see where it would cause any problems. When i get the right relay wired up I'll post on it.

I just went into the garage.... both high / low beams are on simultaniously when the high beams are activated. You don't need to mod a thing! ;)

They weren't that way from the factory...or at least mine weren't. Maybe you have the helpful gremlin in your wiring.

Both bulbs are on for highs. I thought that was why the fogs turn off when you turn the highbeams on, because you can't have more the 4 forward-facing lights on. But who knows...

The Protege has a single H4 bulb so there's no way for that to happen. The P5 has the dual bulb setup, so the highs and lows will stay on. I've seen this on a P5 on the road and my loaner Mazda6 does the exact same thing. I was even talking to Tara about that yesterday. I loved how the M6's lights lit up the road.. Maybe it's time for a headlight conversion in my MSP.. :D

It would be nice to have both beams on without holding the highbeam stalk.

Driving those empty curvy stretches of road's requires 2 hands on the wheel.

actually, the reason i put this in the performance forum was due to the fact that i see this conversion as a performance gain over an appearance gain. i live in an area where the roads are empty, the speed limits are high, and there are deer everywhere. that means the better i can see, the more confidence i have to drive fast. so to me, this is a performance gain, because i couldn't care less about how it makes my car look. just a thought though.

is there any way i can do a mp5 headlight conversion?

Yeah, it wires them to come on with the normal running lights that are on before your Headlights are on.

But the last time I checked, those lights stay on even when the brights are on.... so it would stand to reason.

if u go to the HOW TO theread and read the thread about it, they actualy say that they fogs will STILL turn OFF when the HB are turned on:rolleyes:

I haven't changed a thing, and it works just like you want. I'd have yours checked out my friend. Both are supposed to be on in "high beam" mode.
