Help with speedometer cluster!!!

Hi all, is my first post. I just bought a 04 Mazda 3, with 10,000 miles for a deal and reason it was cheap was the car was originally sold in Canada. I have KPH instead of MPH, both are on the speedometer, but the MPH is so small it needs to be in MPH. I found a complete cluster used with 5k miles on it. Since car is under warranty for a few more years, does the cluster retain the miles or the cars computer. I didn't want to change out the cluster and find out now the car says it has 5k miles and the dealership voids all warranty on the car. Also if I change it out will it show Miles went instead of Kilometers. Or would I need the dealer to reprogram the computer..any info appreciated.

I believe the dealer can reprogram the new cluster for you. Give them a call and see what they say.

look at you being all honest :D

on the Protege5s and a number of other cars that I've worked on, the mileage is retained primarily by the cluster (though I'm sure that something inside the CPU logs the data). there was a guy in an MSP around here that had two gauge clusters; the one that came with the car and another from an LX for warranty purposes (dealerships didn't seem to notice that it was a completely wrong cluster).

I would suggest calling a local dealership and discussing it with the service manager, at the very least they should be able to note something in your service file and be done with it...

Thanks..it would suck to get warranty voided for something stupid like that. There are other things about the canadian model that kinda suck, the auto wipers is cool, but all the time on headlights suck. Just ordered a painted spoiler and fog lights.

or you can just leave it alone and learn how to drive with kilometers like everyone else in the world ;) converting miles to/from kilometers is simple math anyway :)

This subject reminds me back when they built our state toll road. All the mile makers and exit ahead signs were in the international measurement, except the speed limit signs. After a few people yelled about it, the state changed them to the standard method. You can still see the reflective boxes where they fixed the signs until this day.

Back on the subject, atleast you have the cool toys cause us Americans don't have it. lol

If it was me driving the car all the time just keeping the KPH would be ok, but I bought the car for my wife and I can see her getting a ticket.
