HELP!!! I'm not sure why, but the moonroof on my '99 Protege LX has suddenly stopped working. I still have map lights, but no tilt or open functions for the moonroof itself. I've checked all of the fuses, both in the engine compartment and the interior driver's side, but no luck. Does anyone have any ideals????????

Jesus Christ. (hand) My car's about to explode and all I get are a bunch of comedians (fuoops) LOL

Seriously, no one knows of any secret inline fuse or maybe some out-of-the-way mini? I can't accept that it's GONE! (sad1)

does it make any noise at all, or even try to budge. I know mine at one point had been parked under a pine tree for a day or so and some sap happened to drip on it right where the rubber seal meets the metal. Well i get in and try to open it and nada. I was like wtf mate. J/k but i was like what the hell man. Then i realized it was trying and so i used my hand to help it out, and it broke free. Then to get it to stop sticking, i had to open the roof and clean and wax that opening so it would work freely again. Just a thought? other than that could be numerous things. If you need a breakdown of the schematics shoot me a pm, i have a manual for the p5 and i wouldnt think it would be any different.

I noticed when I had my P5 there wasn't any emergency crank just incase the sunroof stopped working. My civic had a little crank so you could crank it shut if it broke in the open position.

Does anyone know if there is something like that for the p5's??

ok people i had this problem with my ES about 3 weeks after i bought it in 02. For some reason god hates you and has burned out your moonroof motor (mine was 3 weeks old dont tell me its because it was used too much, the car came with 3 miles on it) mine was under warrenty so i didnt have to pay a dime. For you i suggest calling junkyard to find a protege (or maybe any mazda?) with a moonroof and go pull the motor and swap it with yours, or get the part and have someone else swap it cuz i have no idea how (maybe one of the guys that modded their moonroof buttons have seen where it is and have ideas). BTW mine got stuck open in the middle of spring, lucky me it was a dry week.

ps no, there is no emergency crank for the protege roof, i asked when mine got stuck open.

No, it makes no noise whatsoever. It just stopped. No hesitation, no burning smell, no other indications of imminent failure, just nothing. However, the map lights still work, so I'm assuming that power is still getting there. Is there some way I can check to see if the motor still works? I'd hate to take it out and find out that it wasn't the problem at all! Also, is there a way to test the controls (push buttons) themselves to see if they haven't somehow shorted out?

And luckily mine has frozen up while SHUT. I would've killed someone if it had happened with it open...

only way to test switches would be either to pull them and test, or pull the motor and make sure its getting power. here are some pics i snapped of the screen in the workshop manual. they go in order 1-5. Also check the relay, which the manual says is built into the motor in yours.

Do I have to pull the motor to test it or can I just disconnect it while it's still attached to the frame? Also, do you think that theres ANY way I could do the inspections without removing the headliner??? Seems like that would be a b****...

The switches are already out. How do I test those?

BTW, those schematics are awesome. They look right on. Where'd you get them?

got the schematics from a P5 Shop manual. And the only way i know to test the switches would be with a test light or a ohm meter, or the like. And just test it using the pictures above. It shows what position is what and when it is hot and when its not.

You said in the other thread that you have done both of the mod guides I have posted?

If so, the first thing to check is the new fuse and wire from the always on mod.
Then check the switches for any shorts.
For example, if close is shorted to ground, then the open button simply won't do anything.

Since I have done the mods to my car I open my moonroof nearly everyday when I get in the car after work, then close it about 5 minutes later.
I would say I use it excessivly, but my car is also only 7 months old.

get a small hammer or screwdriver , tap on the motor and open it at the same time, if it moves you need a motor, if it doesnt , it is either stuck or the switch went out

Yep, I did them.

Did that right off the bat and all was fine.

I'm starting to think that I screwed something up with the soldering, because none of the switches or functions work; an apparent short or accidental severance. However, the map lights DO work, so power is getting to the switch console...

Well, of course it works for you. Why? BECAUSE YOU'RE A FREAKIN' GENIUS, THAT'S WHY!!! It goes kapooey on you, all you have to do is fire up that V8 brain of yours and within 10 minutes, it's all re-wired, with a new schematic drawn and a patent pending at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Me? No such luck. You want something translated from Latin, fine. You want to learn how to teach English to speakers of a foreign language, no sweat. Got a thesis that needs editing? I'm your man. But if it comes down to a mod I screwed up on, I'm all like, "Um, yeah. Okay, sure. Now, the ground goes to the white and... No, wait, it's the blue goes to... Um... What's that burning smell? Oh, sh*t! *fire extinguishers being used maniacally* Say, has anyone seen ZapWizard lately?"

Can you tell I'm a little stressed out on this? (boom01) Thought so...

You can tell how fried I am right now. I swear to God, I read your post and almost flamed you, because I thought you were being a wise-ass and talking about my actual four-cylinder engine. (freak) Jesus. I can be real dense sometimes.

Anyways, I'll try that idea, too. Just as soon as I'm done hitting my engine with a hammer and "opening it up" with the gas...
