Help Me Decide: CX-5 vs. CR-V

Yes finally. Mango will sleep much better tonight. :)

Hahahah.

Dunno about that, but Mango and I will certainly commute much safer day OR night than you 2017 owners in your less sporty and more unsafe but "seems more mature" vehicles :P

Yup.

And what's funny is that schmuck Dave Coleman had the audacity try and compare the CX-5 to a Lexus, Mercedes and Audi? It can't even beat a 'box on wheels/appliance' CRV. Hell it's debatable whether it's even better than the previous generation. They need to stay in their lane and go back to making cars that appeal to enthusiasts/sports car guys and not try and compete with the premium, practical automotive brands.

Not attacking, but i'm just curious as to why you care so much that us 2017 owners are happy with our cars? It seems as though you enjoy attacking everything about the 2017 and I can't understand why if the people who actually OWN the car really enjoy it. Are you mad that we like it, or are you angry at Mazda for making it a certain way, or do you feel like someone owes you a cookie? I think the 2017 owners wants to know. Would it be nice to have a 300hp engine that makes 357 pound feet of torque? Totally! But I didn't buy that. I took this car for a test drive and it won me over. In fact when I test drove this car it was the only one of the bunch that I test drove without knowing much about. I think the only thing I knew is that it has the same i4 engine that mazda uses in most of it's cars. For the first time I wasn't looking at the numbers, and for the first time I was able to say that I found a car that felt right. I know i'm wasting my time typing this as you and a few others really seem to hate the '17 and you can't seem to find a mountaintop high enough to yell it from. All i'm asking is for a mutual respect for my fellow '17 owners. We're all here because we own Mazda's. We're not here to compete with anyone. On paper this car stinks and I wouldn't have considered it. In the real world it's a fantastic non-sports car that can fit my road bike in the trunk.

Just so you know, the reason why I wrote that post is to point out that your posts (even when hidden) really rub people the wrong way. Imagine how you would feel if we all trashed your 2005 Mazda 3 over and over and over even though you were with your fellow 2005 Mazda 3 owners. We all come here to relax and have grown up conversations with our fellow owners. Yes, the CRV is a nice car, but it's okay if not everyone on the planet owns one. Imagine if Samsung were the only company you were able to buy a cellphone from because some reviewers (who get paid) tell you it's the best, even though I know that Touchwiz is pure garbage (sorry for the TW reference).

What would make the front passenger go from 3 stars to 5 stars?
What would make the front passenger go from 5 stars to 3 stars? That's what Mazda did to 2016 CX-5 seemly nothing had changed on chassis.

And what would make the front passenger and combined rear seat on side crash ratings go from 5 stars to 4 stars? Anything go backward on NHTSA safety ratings is a failure to me.

Only Mazda knows why ⋯

Purchased a CX5 last year after considering the alternatives in it's class. The driving experience was the reason. The new 17 model appears to have some decent improvements that I would appreciate (memory seat, HUD, sound deadening). The new CRV would be on my on my short list also, and looks to be a serious contender.

Nah bro, people want that little "jerk" as their vehicle interrupts power application to the pavement and then violently continues it, while their transmission shifts, "because it feels good" and they trust it as a more durable solution. Never mind the violent "bang" that people report when it happens sometimes 2 gears at a time. It totally offers that over the CR-V. Totally.

omfg dude really? what next a Z06 w/CVT standard to save a few sips of fuel? You can be a traitor and trash your car and/or Mazda that's lost its way per your wisdom all you want but honestly and with all due respect (thanks Ricky Bobby) now you're just being a dbag.

We've been asking this question for months. Good luck getting an answer. Mango's only posts are where he can trash on Mazda and CX-5's. I've never seen another kind of post from him, ever.

Congrats Mango, you win. We all ****** up and bought the wrong car. (Is that why you show up to specifically trash Mazda at every turn and is that what you want to hear?)

Anyway, aside from Uno, everyone can be happy with our CX-5's, Mango, you can be happy with your CR-V. Live and let live.

My thoughts exactly.
I m not a true Fanboi - you can call me a tester and I have reservations about the Windshield and EPA 33 for my 16.5 - I know what and where to praise it as well. Not too long ago - I mentioned that Skyactiv's are some of the best Trannies under 60K USD. I think Uno agreed but the whole swinging your opinions wildly to get under few people's skin is not classy.

Just add to the ignore list. They will all go away...Honestly, when Uno said he shops at night and does not like people, it all makes sense to me...

If people don't like their cars, their house, their partners, they should move on. Really. Find something to make you happy. Posting whinny things on a mazda board can't really make anyone happy.

And honestly, why such a fuss about one review. So a mag likes the CR-V more than the CX-5. So, who cares? Buy what you like.

There's a lot of CRV owners with too much jerking though....

Because Motor Trend is one of the most influential automotive publications? I agree that people should just buy what they like though. For some of us, including myself, what we bought may have resulted in some regret, but articles like this will influence potential buyers in a substantial way.

Apparently you missed my posts about issues on many 2016 CX-5 trannies. The best auto tranny? Yes, as long as it doesn't break!

I didnt miss the post - but at what point do you say its a widespread issue. Its rare to find a CX5 with reliable tranny? OR its rare to find one with it? That is important. I think for what I am seeing - there are random issues with earlier batches but never a widespread recall or TSB affecting a big chunk, if there is I have not read it on the forums. You can try to hang on to certain biases and amplify them - like Unob paying 5K less than a new Touring and how it does not hold well once thoroughly vetted.
Most tranny issues have a TSB and there has been a quick response from Mazda to fix those - respect 07 07 07.

All transmissions across different car makers will usually have a small batch of dodgy ones. The CX-5 or more accurately the Mazda Skyactiv-Drive Automatic Transmission wouldn't be an exception

Actuslly, the z06 got a 10 speed auto, and is faster with it I believe. It would have a cvt, if it could be made to live behind 650hp I bet. Most truly serious drag cars have a 5500+ stalled 2 speed, which is very very close to what a cvt is, in function at least.

Well, a lot of people talked a lot of s*** about his crv, and turns out, the 2017 cx5 really sucks compared to the 2017 crv. Just like me, he's getting his licks in where they hurt. Because he turned out to be correct. Lots of people shat on my opinion that better sound deadening would be a good idea, along with less nvh, and now that Mazda has totally destroyed the cx5 (slow as hell, worse safety rating than even their last 2016, which was a downgrade even from my 2015..., worse handling....basically all the things this forum totally hung it's hat on), people are buying it in record numbers, and defending it tooth and nail, basically proving that I was radically correct, so much so that the changes I suggested were more than enough to make up for all of the wrong turns Mazda took with it both for people at large, and this enthusiast forum....so yeah, I'm rubbing it in a bit too after being told how stupid my ideas were....they are the only thing keeping it alive!

So if you weren't one of the jack wagons who lit into me about my " terrible ideas"...my posts snark content isn't for you.

If you had to deal with what I do, you would to. I know people like you just think you do. Go work an ER or be a cop, emt, firefighter, etc and do some real interaction. You might shop at night and question the veracity of the words coming out of someone's mouth a lot more, too. If you actually do have a job that deals with people and the nitty gritty of what they are, then props to you for being super positive about being out in public still!

My cx5 does exactly what I bought it to, and gives me similar satisfaction to my coffee maker. Just like I bought it to do.

As to magazines....I bought my cx5 solely because of consumer reports, and it was near me and I got a great trade in deal. If CR had slammed it, I'd have bought another vehicle on that same lot. Publications matter.
