Heat Sheild Peice fell off

I have an '02 P5 2.0 liter.

There is a small heat shield held on to the exhaust pipe by two clamps on these cars. its just before the CAT I think, or right after I cant recall. Its not the one that goes around the CAT.

Anyways a piece of it fell off on me. Broke off right at one of the clamps, due to .... rust of course. So I mosey on into the dealership figuring the part with clamps would be somewhere around $40 bucks. Turns out this heat shield has no part number, therefore it comes with the Cat, and I would have to buy the whole assembly which I was quoted at $1600..... all to get a small 10"ish piece of tin heat shield.

So now what do I do, they say the cars floorboards can catch on fire if you don't use it. I could try some local scrap yards but I doubt ill have much luck.

Do you really need these things, could I attach it back on with some kind of Heat Tape? Or does it get to hot for even that. Could you use JB weld? (I dont have access to a real welder).

All I know is $1600 is a lot for a bunch of stuff I don't need.

you dont need the heatshield there
aftermarket headers dont have them and i havent heard anything about them needing one

i went to the dealership and they quoted me 200 bucks for that part (i think your talking about the j pipe) and the heatshield, so you might want to check again

mine actually fell off a few months ago, i remember it was holding on by one bolt, a rusty one at that, then one day i saw it was gone so haha who knows where it fell off

I went so far as to reattach mine with a metal ring clamp. Then my J-pipe came undone at the cat so when they replaced that, they didn't even bother putting the shield back on. You don't need it, but just for good measure, be carefull if you're parking on semi tall grass on a hot day, other than that, don't worry about it.
