Heard a THUMP today from driver side front

I was driving rather spiritedly today, messing with a G35 sedan. I left the light with a casual clutch engagement and was gradually accelerating in first. I nailed it at around 4K and grabbed 2nd as fast as I could. I still lifted when I clutched and grabbed second. The motor hesitated for a second and then there was this POP or I guess you could describe it as a thump, but whatever it was came from the driver side front.

Has me a little bit concerned. I just filled it with 93 today from the BP station. Seems to run great otherwise and no funny noises. I just sounded like something isn't quite tight up there. Motor mount perhaps?

Yes sir, you need mounts. EVERY MS3 needs them. It should be a requirement for every owner ! Give a call to PROTEGE GARAGE. They can set you up with whatever suits your needs. The TRZ combo gets my vote, but if you are not a seriois modder and dont like some noise/vibration its not for you.

Thanks guys,
It happened when the load on the front was max. Right at the torque peak at the bottom of second gear, so I guess this makes sense.

Could have been the the tire slipping losing traction....it will actually cut the motor for a split second...happened to me as well MM will definately help
though

Only if the traction control was on. The engine doesnt really even cut though, it just closes the throttle a little. I dont think that would cause the thump.

You know it almost sounded like a POP like a spline on half shaft slipped or something crazy like that, but there has been no drivetrain noise or any problems with the car since then and I simply don't drive it that hard or take it to the track etc. What are the other benefits to motor mounts? Does it remove some of the herky, jerky clutch action in the lower gears at low RPM? If it adds a lot of noise and vibration to the interior I'll do without. This is my daily driver.

It adds noise and vibes that calm down a bit after a few hundred miles but will never fully go away. It makes shifting a dream and gives the car much more predictability between gears as you don't have the engine rocking around sloppiness anymore.

I have the TRZ set and those are pretty vibey, but it doesn't bother me at all. If you are concerned about vibes, look into getting the CP-E rear mount and side mounts if they ever release them.

Thanks for the feedback Dale. Sounds like a mod where the benefits are good enough that I might be willing to live with the downside of added NVH.
