headunit choices

I have the Pioneer Avic D3. Love how it looks and fits into the dash, AND it has GPS!

Sorry but the pic was taken with a camera phone.

My Head unit sticks out on the sides about an inch from the mount. but for 200.00 I cannot complain to much.Maybe after X-Mas I will look into that pioneer and give my wife the one I have now.

hahah nice movie
u sure ur wife dont midn that u were watching that?

btw, did ur headunit just bolt on like that? or did u add something around it to make it look like it came like that from factory?

The problem with mine is that theres a lot of room around it so I have to get something to cover it.

My wife Buys me the movies :). You need to buy a Double din Installation Kit to hide the gaps surrounding the unit . Make sure it is a double din kit . Some radios requires you to cut off some of the edges to get the radio to fit . I used a dremel. And the kit also comes with the mounting hardware to hold the radio in place. Mine was I think about 20.00 from crutchfield.com.

thanks!
Im gonna go ahead and order it then instead of keep trying to make my own.

PS: I STILL DONT BELIEVE UR WIFE ALLOWS THOSE MOVIES! LOL

ok, its ordered!
hopefully Ill have it before Friday so I can rock my new look on the weekend :)
thanks for the info btw

nice looking!

daymn that looks mint!
where did u get the fittings around the unit? custom?
I recently got a double din jensen, and even tho its in, theres a hole around it that bothers me.

I actually picked up a piece from tweeter. The guys in the installation bay were really cool about it, I told them that I needed a thicker black piece so they found an extra one they had (i think it was originally off of a pioneer) and it fit perfectly.

How in the hell do I get the stock unit out? It just does NOT want to budge. Crutchfield sent 4 DIN tools, but on the ones on the right/passenger side seemed to do anything. I couldn't get the left side to budge.

Get some one in to help and push on radio from behind while you keep trying to pull it out with the pins .I had the same promlem and when I pulled at the front I ripped the face plate off then after more work I got cut on my finger. After that I hit that damn thing with a hammer till I could see what was getting cought.once I found where my radio was snagging it pulled right out.

Where are you accessing it from behind to push? I couldn't figure out how to do that, either. The problem for me was that I could get the DIN tools to release the catches on the right/passenger side... and that side wanted to come right out. But for the life of me I couldn't get the left/driver's side to do a damn thing. I couldn't even get the DIN tools to find anything to release... they wanted to slide ALL the way in.

youre going to have to destroy your stocker basically. same thing happened to me, just the left side came, not the right. once you remove that front plate from the stocker, you can see more

Remove the glove box and from there you will have little access. It is hard to explain where you need to hook to remove the radio and I am willing to bet that anyone who has taken one of these radios out will know how to get it out without a destroy but it is hard to explain how to get it out . I can now do it without a problem. When I get home from work maybe I can take some pics of the wrecked and junky radio and try to show you where your having your problem.

I called the local Circuit City and they charge $35 for just a head unit removal. I may take them up on it for the sake of simplicity. But then again, I've already destroyed my stock head unit...

So the professionals at Circuit City can't get the damn thing out, either. He said that they have problems with a lot of Ford and Mazda stereos because they don't have them properly aligned when they intall them in the factory. So I unless I take apart the dash, I'm just going to have to start pulling the old stereo apart layer by layer until I can see what the heck it's catching on.

Call Crutchfield support before breaking out the Sawzall.

I called them last night when I was trying to figure out if the stereo was bolted in in the back or something. The Technical Support guy was looking at the same instructions I was looking at. There's nothing more that they can do. The clips on the left/driver side are simply not visible for me to trip them and pull out the head unit.

It not bolted in, i did my mine myself...what i did is take off the glove box and there are cables for the ac, heat and stuff like that connected and you have to disconnect them and the hole front piece of the dash will come off
