I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket HU at best buy since they will install for free. Anyone recommend it? or anything I should tell them to do or not to do? how hard is it to install myself? I'm just very shaky on wiring stuff...thanks for your help

If you that worried, send me the harness for the car and the one from the new radio. I'll put the butt connectors on for you.

In a protege its really easy.
Just connect up the matching wires of each harness and then cap off the ones that don't have a mate.

Not hard at all. Just match the colors up and you are done. I've done it 50 times if I've done it once. If I can do you so can you. ;)

Probably want to take the factory harness out and wire it up with the deck harness though. After that is done, it's plug and play...no need cut the power.

No problem.

I just got an Alpine CDE-9852 from best buy. Now, where do I get or how do I make the harness?
On back to BestBuy.
They usually have a audio install department on the backside of their building..

Just walk in and ask for a '02 protege harness. It'll be $15 or so if they have it in stock.
As for wiring, it's simple.

Just match what each says to the same thing.
(they're usually the same color.. they've been getting better about that)
Either take your time to shorten, strip, and solder each connection ...
or crimp them together.

Can someone verify for me if this is th correct wiring harness for the protege? I got it at Ultimate Electronics. Just want to make sure. Thanks!

the part number is right but the pins dont look right at all.
The speaker wires should be on each side of the harness and they are all on one side.

Pulling out the radio will tell the tale

should look like this

Wait, I think I got it.

Is there a plug on each side of that harness?
If so then you have one of the universal harnesses.
With them you need two harnesses. One of them will be Car to universal and the second harness you need is universal to radio type. So you need a mazda to universal harness then you need a universal to alpine.

As the alpinecomes with its own side, then you can lop off the universal side of the car to universal harness. Then use butt connectors to attach the alpine harness and whats left of the car to universal harness.

No, its only one plug with open wires on the other end. So this is the wrong harness. Do you know if best buy will have the correct harness that connects right up with the stock plug?

They do. That's why I recommended it. All you'll have to do is match colors of your alpine harness to the new one.

I'm connecting the wiring harness to the alpine harness right now. Both have a REM/Turn-on wire (blue/white). Should I connect these? I have a subwoofer that also needs to connect to the REM. Can I cannot all 3 together? Thanks!

The harness i got at best buy is not 100% the same. There are some missing pins but the plastic housing is the same shape. Is this right?

Someone elses stock one?:

Yes...your new deck doesn't need all the connections. It just needs power, ignition, ground, dimmer, and 8 wires for the speakers. I think that's it.
