Has anyone mastered this clutch?

Well its my 3rd day driving the car and I can't figure out this clutch. I am a newby to clutches as this is my second car with a clutch. But I was fine in my MSP. Now this thing has me stalling again on hills and crap. Also my 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 gear are kind of jerky. After that I'm fine. So does anyone have any tricks that they are using to smooth this out.

I got used to it after like 3 minutes in the MS6.. drove one on the track at Zoom Zoom Live Boston. It definitely is weird, but I kinda like it.. I like that the pedal pressure changes where it's actually engaging.. you can really feel it, and don't have to worry about the rest of the range of the clutch pedal.

It did feel like it engaged over a really short range though, so it may feel a bit touchy.

I never stalled one or have any shifting issues... I can shift smoothly with it... hell, I don't even own an MS6!

but yeah... you need skills, and skills come from practice ;)

Its not all skills, the engagement on this clutch is up real high so you tend to use your thigh muscle instead of your ankle. Its tough to get used to. There is a "how to" on the other forum on adjusting the engagement point, and fixes this issue. There are some that already did it, and its like night and day. mazda6club.com

it reminds me of my 1990 predude. Fussy on hills. I've gotten much much better in the last month or more. The woman is still struggling. Hills are tricky for the first few 1000 miles and I've driven a standard for 15 years.

I'm driving around just fine now.

I have to agree that it takes a little getting used to. 11 years in manuals and this clutch is completely different from anything I've ever driven before. Of course, I've only had mine for a day and a half, but still.

Clutch

I have been driving my Speed6 three weeks now. I have to confess, I stalled it twice on the first day I had it. But once you get the feel it is no problem. Now my foot is accustomed to the feel and the uptake. It does take a little more effort than most cars but after a week or so you wont even notice.

practice

Definitely intimidating at first. The problem is that when bottomed out, the pedal almost doesn't want to come off the floor, them wammy...instant engagement. I've got 3000kms on it but it was easy after about 500. Still a little over rev on the steep hills (just to be safe).
I can see how adjusting the bottom limit of the pedal will help keep it out of that dead zone and make release more predictable. Have to try it someday.

Practice practice practice

I didn't seem to have any problems on my test drive. Although I did notice the different force feedback, and it led me to some innacurate clutch pulls for the first few normal launches. I didn't feel it was anything I couldn't get used to.

The one I test drove was a demo car with a few hnderd miles on it, so I didn't feel too bad doing a nice 4000rpm launch. Anyways the clutch seemed a little looser with the feedback after that :)

Cheers :)

Have the dealer adjust the pedal so it's a little closer to the floor. Consensus is 1.5-2.5 turns in on the adjusting rod. There's still plenty of travel to go before power engages. Guess what? Then it's just like all the other clutches you've ever driven! A whole bunch of us on another forum did this and we are all much happier. For me, I drove it for nine months the way it came from the factory and never really got use to it. I think you leg muscles get used to doing something and by the time you're middle-aged it takes a lot of concentration to do it differently.

Takes a little to get use to, but I like the clutch so far. I have stalled twice though. The first time I went to drive it I didn't relize I had the car in 3rd lol. I tried pulling out stalled it, started it back up and got moving, then relized oh s*** thats 3rd not 1st. lol. I'm a goober. And stalled last night, what can I say i was tired, 2 hour drive 4 hours at a concert then another 2 hour drive.

I couldn't quite get used to the clutch during 5 days I've had it. So I adjusted the clutch pedal yesterday. It was very very easy to do.

I ended up going 2 turns down, and it was nice, but I adjusted it again to about 3 turns out, and it definitley feels like any other clutch I've owned before.

I really can't even feel the point where the spring forces harder. It feels very linear now. And shifting and launching is MUCH smoother.

I've been working on cars and motorcycles for a long time. I doubt there's to many people on this board from my area. But if anyone around the Buffalo, NY area wants their clutch adjusted, but is uncomfortable doing such an adjustment, or desn't have the correct tools. I'll offer to adjust your clutch pedal for you...It only takes about 10 minutes.

All you need to do it yourself is a few open end wrenches, 1/2", 10mm and 12mm. And a marker or something if you want to count the number of turns...

Great write-up here: http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=59565&st=15

That should bring you to page #2, bt incase it didn't, it's post #16 on page 2, by a member "Super Car Tastes - Skoda Budget", thats his screen name, no kidding.....

He really elaborates. If you want the cliff-nots version:

1.) Loosten the clutch cylinder rod, it has a 12mm locknut, and has a 10mm hex on the rod.

2.)Turn the rod clockwise 3 turns. Re-tighten the 12mm lock nut against the rod coupling.

3.) adjust the clutch pedal stop bolt, so you have about 1/4" freeplay before you feel more resistance.

4.) Test ride. There's a few things you have to test. Does motor start in neutral with clutch out, it shouldn't. Does the cruise contol switch on normally, and switch off when you press down the clutch pedal, it should.

What forum did you list there? Can you pm me. Some one took out the name.

Thanks,
Ryan

i just did the adjustment today and it makes a world of difference. only problem is that i've now lost the urge to just drive it sanely and normally. PM me if you need the link.

Guess they feel the need to block the link in PM's too. How stupid is that. This is a forum to help each other out, and yet you can't post links to solutions.

Neato!

I PM'd you my email address, can you please send it there.

Thanks,
Ryan

done and done. if anyone else needs/wants the link, just PM an email address and i'll send it to there.
