Has anyone mastered this clutch?

hey, no prob. this makes such a difference in this car, it would be a crime to not share it.

What have you guys heard about premature wear on these clutches? I am *this close* to buying a MS6. But I could smell the clutch on the two I test drove. I did NOT do a clutch dump, I did NOT slip it excessively. I have been driving a stick for over 20 years and have never had to replace a clutch. But I have seen some postings where some MS6 owners had to get new clutches in the first 20,000 miles. I can accept that they could have been abusive to their cars... but the fact that I could smell it on two different cars (one with 150 miles, and one with 3700 miles) really concerns me. I loved the car otherwise.
I like the clutch. I have big feet so can leave my heel on the floor and just rotate my ankle to engage it. Not like so many Mustang GTs or my M3. Definitely have to use the whole left leg for those cars.

I've done some hard launches... and had no problems.. other times... I've "attempted" to launch hard.. only having the car go nowhere.. and clutch burn down.... Makes me cry...

Evo's are well known for burning up their clutches early on... All of these sporty 4-cyl turbo AWD cars have clutch issues in one way or another. The only way to solve this really would be to install a clutch you'd see on a 2 ton pickup or something.. but then shifting would be like... a 2 ton pickup...

As best I can tell, depending on how you drive, if you like the speed and power... and zoom around quite a bit, you'll be replacing the clutch in or around 50-60k... You'll meet a lot of people who claim they run the s*** outta their speed6's and have no clutch burning... I met one of these such people down here in cali... went for a ride with him.. he launched twice... smelled his clutch both times... I didn't say anything as I wanted to see if he had an excuse... Apparently he didn't notice....

If baby the clutch, never go above 80... and take 2 min to get there.... this clutch will last you forever... If you do 0-100 in 10 seconds pullin onto a freeway like I do all the damn time... you'll probably be replacing it a bit earlier than other vehicles... However, by the time I need replacing my clutch i'll be able to do it myself =)

Thanks. So how many miles on your MS6? No slip yet? You ever smell the clutch after a hard ride?

I drive mine pretty damn hard most of the time. I have almost 21000 on mine and no slippin yet. Smells a little if I go hard on a long drive, like the winding drive to the lake.

If I get 50k out of the clutch thats cool. Worth the fun!

why was this censored???

Great write-up here: http://forum.***************/index.php?showtopic=59565&st=15

That should bring you to page #2, bt incase it didn't, it's post #16 on page 2, by a member "Super Car Tastes - Skoda Budget", thats his screen name, no kidding.....

He really elaborates. If you want the cliff-nots version:

1.) Loosten the clutch cylinder rod, it has a 12mm locknut, and has a 10mm hex on the rod.

2.)Turn the rod clockwise 3 turns. Re-tighten the 12mm lock nut against the rod coupling.

Why was this link censored?

3.) adjust the clutch pedal stop bolt, so you have about 1/4" freeplay before you feel more resistance.

4.) Test ride. There's a few things you have to test. Does motor start in neutral with clutch out, it shouldn't. Does the cruise contol switch on normally, and switch off when you press down the clutch pedal, it should.

Don't know if its me or not, but I've noticed that the clutch issue goes away with time, when I picked the car up it was soft hard soft, now since I've been driving it, the pedal is starting to normalize. At lights I have worked the clutch pedal to its limits and that has seemed to help ease the spring tension off a quite a bit.

The engagement point feels good to me, yes I am getting more adjusted to it I suppose but like most things I think we just make the adjustment and then that feels normal...its all what you get use to. what really defines "normal"?

I'm sorry, but you are not going to have my support on this. While I will not post the links in question, let it be known in the 5-6 years I have been here I have not said boo to anyone, but this is complete foolishness.
