I went to a local Mazdaspeed dealership to see if the parts guy had any idea about the LSD in the MSP being for sale. He said yes, for $565...

He was unsure if you need to run the bigger halfshafts or not as he didn't know the slpine count. However, he said he would find out for sure if I went with the MSP LSD.

Anyway, he tried to tell me that the Phantom Grip LSD is only a couple of hundred dollars and works just fine. I have never heard of this thing. It is some little block that you fit into the differential and it becomes an LSD.

Anyone, anyone...What the hell? I am rather skeptical that a little block of metal can change my open diff to a limited slip.

1) The more I find out about the MSP LSD, the more that seems to denote that you don't HAVE to get the half shafts (but no one knows for certain)

As far as the phatom grip LSD, there is a good page of someone that did an install (not in a mazda) that pretty much stated it's a load of crap.

The spline count between the 22 mm and 24 mm is the only reason why I would need to change the drive shafts, as far as I know. Not power issues.

Thanks for the info on the Phantom Grip deal

i've heard that phantom grip are reasonably priced and are ok up to about 200 hp. i had one installed in my second car just before xmas. too early to judge. more details here:

I have wrote to them a few month ago. Here their answer about makoing one for my MP3:

We can make a custom unit is we have the diff in house for fitment and development.$349 + shipping about a week turnaround time.Let us know if this interests you and are able to supply the diff when ready. Thank you for your interest in Phantom Grip,
Janice

I have read a good article on SCC about them!

My input from research:

I've had contact with a few people that have PG units. I actually hear good things in the performance department, which actually surprises me. I'll tell you why.

Now don't take this as fact, as I don't know if you guys will have this problem. This is on a Probe mind you. In order to install the PG (yes, it's two blocks of metal with springs between them) the spider gears had to be ground down. It just didn't physically fit. The guy had to take at least 1/16" off each I believe. My numbers may be off, but the point remains. It was actually a lot of work to install.

Again, they may have worked on this, I don't know if it'll be the same for you guys.

Also, I believe the reason those first units fell apart was because the springs pressing the blocks apart (and into the spider gears) were too weak. The spring rates were all wrong.

Now the person with this modification most documented that I've seen, the Probe, has been running around 225hp to the wheels (nitrous oxide) with drag radials and has had no problems.

So, my view would be that it's actually a pretty good alternative for the short term. (I don't really like the idea of pressing metal against metal as it does even though it's immersed in oil.) For a longer duration, I'd say a full-fledged LSD unit would be the ticket. Do they work? Yes, it seems they do. The question I think is: are you comfortable with HOW they work?
