Its not really a matter of saving money for the classic, assuming I sell my PRS I will have enough. I just want something a little less expensive so I dont feel like I have to baby it. And care to give some reasons to avoid the studio and go with the classic (NOT shutting down this idea AT ALL, I just want to know why you say it)

Oh, and reasons for the classic, or even the standard line, over the studio.... understood about the price factor, BUT, the nice wood that i spoke of before is MORE likely to be found in the more expensive lines. For example, for the 'historic' custom shop les pauls, they go through a very specific selection process for the mahogany that they use, which is why you hardly ever find a dud from one of those batches. Its the same thing for the more expensive 'regular shop' models, just to a lesser degree. Thats not to say you can't get a studio thats 10x better than a certain les paul standard.

Okay, i'll just leave you with this.... go play em. I'ma shut up now. (thumb)

So, play a bunch of guitars, and my suggestion is to play them unplugged, so that you can really get a feel for the resonance of the guitar itself, uncolored by whatever pickups and amp you're playing through. Once you have a really resonant guitar, that you like the basic sound of, you can adjust pickups or amps or amp settings accordingly, until the tone just oozes.

Best advice in this thread.

And even tho' I have always been a Fender (Strat) guy at heart, you gotta love the fat, in-your-face sound of a Les Paul at full scream.
My advice, sell the PRS and get an Tele AND a Les Paul. Used if you have to, to afford both.

don't know if this was supposed to be a good or bad thing.....don't get me wrong, i respect "The Boss" for his song writing, but i really can't get into his music

(mswerd) I found my gibson RD artist that way.. I went to a lot of second hand shops looking for the right one, and finally settled on it. but at first I played it unplugged.

I found that playing it unplugged will let you know if there are any unusual buzzes in the body or neck.

only problem with buzzing is that it's usually just a problem of poor factory setup, which every fender i have ever owned has been a victim of. however, it's usually easy to fix, provided you let the right person do the adjusting.

I couldn't agree with this idea more. It's more important to see how it feels. The sound can be tweeked later. But I still say SG.....SG.......SG

So I went to guitar center last night and spoke with the guy I bought my PRS from. He spent the whole time telling me why he would be pissed if I sold it. I told him I still wasnt happy with the sound I was getting with my PRS/Triple Rec combo. We talked about possibly changing out my tubes (he can get me all new tubes for about $150) and he also talked me into getting all the cables. So I went to play the guitars and ended up just spending over $100 on three new monster cables. he also said he would come by my house sometime and help me set my amp to get some real good sounds. I went home and spent about an hour playing with settings and I am getting happier with my PRS and may keep it

meh. he probably just sold you some s*** you didn't need. although a set of tubes WILL make a huge difference. i replaced the tubes in my Peavey Delta Blues combo with a 6 Hard GT EL84 matched set and some Ruby 12AX's. Sounds pretty good now.

no, they really are nice cables, he was explainging some really cool stuff about them. Plus, they have lifetime warranty, If ANYTHING happens, I can bring them in and get new ones free of charge. and I mean anything, he told a story about how a guys studio caught on fire and Monster replaced EVERY cable he had in the studio for free

He suggested I hold off on the tubes though. I have had my triple rec for four years now and thought I should change them, but he said he has had the same tubes in his amp since 93, I will still change them probably this summer though. I just never know if I can get better sounds with my 6L6's or EL34's.......wow, im off topic

good for you, if you sell it you'll probably regret it.

if your amp dont sound as good as it used to, you might look into getting it rebiased. 6L6's are crap imho. KT88's ftfw!

I dont know much about tubes, is this something that I could just put in mine? My friend was saying he bought the same tubes just made by a different company and they were a hotter tubes and sounded better

I have a DeltaBlues 115 and I get tubes from JJs EuroTubes which rule, he loves DBs and puts together custom sets. I was using my other guitar players Triple Recto for a while and in my opinion it doesn't hold a candle to my DB.

Check out the site I mentioned above. He knows all you need to know about tubes.

Oh man, I've always wanted a Les Paul. I have a Strat right now, but I'm not a huge fan of Fender.
