GP Light Weight Protege pulleys

Lol I feel you there. So you just tightened it as tight as you could..i read it was like 110-120 pounds of tq on it. I can only do that when I go to my Dads house probably at the begining of June.

you talking about the crank pulley bolt? it's 116-122ft-lbs. i have the 2003 workshop manual in print and the 2002 workshop manual in PDF. if you need any other specs let me know.

Damn sorry to see that happen with the pulley. First I seen this happen. I wonder what the new redesign of the ps pulley will be like.

Well **** me.

I just happen to have one of those.....Glad I didnt get to the coaters this past week..It was getting done....Now I wont waste time with it.

Those holes need to be teardrop shaped to help thicken up the "spokes" yet still keep them as light as possible.

Wow...I hope he takes care of this.

WTF so is this gunna happen to all of them... i still havent installed mine...
Well..Not neccesarily.....It could have been a bad piece...And until it happens to more than one..I personally and not too worried...but you can see right where it broke was the thinnest spot on the design.

Replacement/ Replacement Screws?

Hello, Brach. I purchased a crank pulley from another member here, and apparently I got the first set of screws (they were a phillips head). As it turns out, I guess they weren't strong enough, because they sheared off. Is there any chance I can get a replacement, or even just replacement screws? I don't have any easy-outs to get these little screws out... Any advice on that? Pic is attached

(Sorry, I didn't take a pic of the back of the pulley before installing- but I do recall that they were phillips head screws, and sat flush with the timing gear.)

Wow...There is seeming to be quite a bit of problems popping up with the pullies.

Do the holes really reduce that much weight? Its already alluminum... I say it needs to be a solid design like the wp pulley was, but teardrop would give some nice apperance.

I hope the screw problem was fixed with the new screws being shipped out. If there is anyone with the new allen head screws in the pulley and have the pulley installed, please comment and give us an update on how its doing.

have the new screws in the crank pulley for a week now. no problems yet. i just have to tighten my belts some, i get a tiny bit of squeal every now and then when it gets hot enough.

By any chance do you have a torque spec for the screws or you just did it hand tight? Use any locktite?

By the way, I bought the pulley off of S.A.MSP, who according to post 996 of this thread, seemed to be quite in-the-know of this problem:

should i still hold off on the Crank Pulley install? i can lock the skrew up with lock tight, my stock balancer is slightly bent

yes, the screws back out then you'll lose your balancer

That's not the balancer it's the motronic trigger wheel for the CKP sensor...

oops, sorry for the misinformation, thanks for the correction!!

...That's the part that really sucks. Not bashing him- the sale was a nice transaction, but he certainly should have mentioned this issue in his for sale thread... I wonder if he has four screws sitting around...

how many miles did you put on it?

Haven't even gone through an oil change... been several months, but my msp is a garage queen. I would guess about 2k or so.

My thoughts exactly. I find myself agreeing more and more with you these days.

If the belt grooves don't line up on the pulley properly on your's, there is a good chance that it will happen to you. I had to tighten the tensioner down a shitload to keep the belt from getting thrown. This no doubt didn't help things, but as forcefed said, the "spokes" are too thin.

Im putting mine on tommorrow but I am scared now(ugh)

Ok I got it on..had to file the inside key thing because it was a hair to big. The pulley doesnt actually set on there all the way..more like 75% of the way.

Now the bad thing is that I stall at idle.

you filed the key or the pulley? the pulley needs to sit on there perfect otherwise the crank position sensor won't be able to read the gear and thats why ur stalling. pull it back off and clean the inside of the pulley and the crankshaft. i sprayed some lubricant i had laying around inside the pulley to make things easier. so try that.

I filed the inside notch. It was less than 1mm to big and would not fit back on. So i filed at the inside of it a little bit..then put the 21mm bolt in and impact gunned it straight on.
