Going back to the dealer........AGAIN!

I left my car parked in the garage for the weekend. Sunday I went outside and opened the hood to check the oil level. When I opened it I saw more anti-freeze sitting on the splash shield at the bottom of the engine. I then looked on the floor and sure enough I had a significant amount of anti-freeze on the floor and the reservoir is down to the low level.

I tracked down that it is coming from the underside of the lower radiator hose. The leak is on the underside and you can't see anything from above but if I put my hand on the underside of the hose where it meets the block my fingers were soaked in anti-freeze.

I'm really starting to get annoyed with the car between the leak, clunk and the metal on metal sound I get every morning when I start the car. I've never had a new car but I expected it to be trouble free for a little while at least. My 90 Civic with 180,000 miles gives me less grief then this car with 450 miles.

Hopefully all this gets sorted out this week at the dealer.

Hey Mark94..
Sorry to hear that you keep having problems with your car when it's not even broken into yet....i hope the Dealership can give you back something return while they get all the problems fixed..

Good Luck!:)

Hang in there, Mark! I know things like that can be damned frustrating. Mazda's a good company. and I'm sure they will get you taken care of.

Thanks guys, I hope it is taken care of also, because I do like the car.

Basically, I was trying to say that you guys should check your cars also to make sure you don't have the problem also. If you were one of the people to get the car fairly early compared to everyone else, check that radiator hose and make sure you don't have a leaky hose. If you see any fluid on that splash shield or smell coolant like some of us have complained then you probably have the leak also.

I think Jonnymiata had the problem also and had the hose replaced. I thought this was one of the problems Mazda knew of took care of before they were shipped?

Check your cars just to be safe guys.

I just changed my oil over the weekend, and at 500 miles I have the coolant leak AND oil leking from near the turbo. The oil looks as if it's coming from the outlet of the turbo, which most likely means I already have a bad turbo. The coolant is leaking from the rubber hose that the Callaway folks added to bring coolant to the turbo. We'll see what they do at the dealership, but I'm not thrilled.

now, i'm worried...
i'm one of those who got their cars early....
And although my car isn't even broken into yet, i'm worried that after i get my first oil change i'll have these problems...i'll look out for the leak though. So far, i've never smelled anything burning...:o

Well,,, I will tell you! If I didn't know better from reading our forum, I would think we had Ferraris or Lambos, or other high maintenance car - not Mazdas!!!

I have 1,100 miles on mine now, and no signs of any leaks. I do smell the motor some when I arrive back at the house and get out after parking in the garage, but no apparent leaks.

I have to get mine over to the dealer this week, so they can replace the scratched Mazda emblem on my steering wheel. And; that looks like they will have to replace the entire airbag assembly. I am told there is not a part # for just the emblem. How crazy is that?!

Limited, I've never really smelled a bad odor. I smelled a hint of it after I pulled it into the garage and I was walking around the front of the car. Others have complained of a smell inside the car.

I've never smelled it inside but I still have the leak. Just check where I described to make sure your car is OK.

Outside near the front of the car, yes. But all is well inside - no smell.

Mark,

Hang in there. My coolant leak was fixed. I just had the hose replaced. It has been great ever since. The only prblem I have now is the clunk and I have narrowed it down to play at the top of the rear shocks. I am assuming all the MSP's have this play and need a fix. There has to be a simple solution.

Thanks Jonny, I'm printing everything you've gone through and researched and bringing it to the dealer to show them what the fix should be. This way they'll know exactly what to do and won't be messing with unecessary items.

Thanks for all the help and posting all your findings! It makes it a little easier for the rest of us and is APPRECIATED!

Mark94, i have my hood up in the garage right now after a drive on the highway to cool off from. I looked in the areas where you pointed out and there doesn't seem to any coolant leak of what so ever at all. With the hood up after the highway drive, i don't smell anything either... So i guess it's only on certain cars. :'(

Mark, you may want to check the regional forums and ask other members if they go to a more responsive dealership in you area.

My coolant smell seems to not be as strong, but I still see fluid under the radiator and there is still some smell, so.... back to the dealer. Last night I put the hood up after an hour driving and noticed a little bit of hazy smoke which makes me think something is burning (but it was also bloody cold).

Clunk? Notice it worse on uneven highway pavement, will get this diagnosed next time I am at dealer and report my findings.

On my Protege MP3 with a turbo I found that the stock radiator hose on the driverside form the radiator to the engine was leaking but only during boost! The stock clamp simply wasn't stron enough. I replaced it with to clamps I picked up at PepBoys and that solved the issue. Also I found that the water lines to the turbo can't take take constant, heat up / cool down, that happens in NH and the hoses were cracking and leaking. One exploded!
