GM Synchromesh is teh ROCK!!!!

Where on earth did you find a 23mm socket? I've looked high and low for one to no avail. Everyone sells 22 and 24, but it seems as though 23mm just isn't common. The same goes for your regular old box wrench as well.

I look forward to filling both the Miata's and the Protege's with GMS.

All hail the mighty Autozone... crafters of the 23mm socket of the gods. $3.20 after tax... no shitt'n. It looks really out of place in my craftsman set though..

Noob question here ... but i change the oil myself in my car all the time ... i have no idea how to change the tranny fluid though. Where is the bolt to remove to drain it and where do you fill it at. How much fluid will it hold?

Pics would be nice.

Thanks
^I would like to know about this also!

any help that, i can get before i go and change the fluid would be great!

Thank you!.....i will be doing this sometime this week!

whatever you do dont get royal purple synchromesh "high performance manual transmission fluid". that stuff is like water, and didnt lubricate very well when the tranny warmed up. its much like ATF, we need something a bit more vicious than that...

We have the same tranny as a P5? So if we do the drain plug and fill plug are in the same locations as in a P5. Just asking cause the pics are from a p5 in the above posts.

I would like to thank DistandTea for replacing my fluid also today. It seems to a lot smoother and was a cheap upgrade. Just let the car cool down a little before you try ;)

and while you're at autozone getting the socket you can pick up syncromesh there..penzoil brand....this and GM are the ony 2 brands that I'd use...both are tried and true on the dsm boards...penzoil is a little cheaper though. 8 bucks as opposed to 10

It was no problem. Anyways I got to take you down Markey Rd to try to make you squeel like a little girl... I was impressed you didn't piss yourself. Kudos to you!

Once your car is all done I HAVE to drive it though. (bowdown)

I have to put up a vote for Redline Lightweight shockproof. Made a very big difference in shifting... and really does a great job of coating the gears and giving a fluid barrier to protect against wear and shock loading! I have pictures to prove it as well! :) I do know that it is much better than stock fluid... and anything (it seems from what people say) is better than the Mobil 1 stuff! LOL.

Here's the service manual page for replacing your transmission fluid. Have fun.

I just changed to the Redline MT-90 last week. I had to buy it from Apex because I couldn't find it at any of the Discount Auto Parts stores (even though Redline's site says that Advanced Auto Parts, who merged with Discount Auto, is the sole in-store distributor).

As with most installs, it took me longer than it should have because I had never done it before, but it really wasn't that bad once I removed 2 plastic pieces from under the car (I did it without jacking the car up).
Here are some pics I took while I was doing it:

I forgot to add my review for Redline. Simply put, this stuff is awesome! I installed the Kartboy bushings a few weeks ago, the Redline last week, & I have the Bronzeoil bushings on the way from Corksport. The shifting felt 100% better with the bushings & 300% better with the MT-90. I can now shift into 5th with no problem everytime & 1st & 2nd feel much better...it's usually easier to get into reverse too. I can also tell that I'm shifting faster than I was ever able to before. Hopefully the Bronzeoil bushings will raise it to a total of 500%. :D

The only shortcoming I see now is that I still have my horrible engine thrash, but my AWR M/T motor mounts finally got here. Once I find some time & means of installing them, my drivetrain should be near perfect! :D

Wow.. that looked like alot of work for just changing the tranny oil... I just crawled under there and did it.

Just a warning for anyone thinking about Mobile 1... I don't care what mazda says it is THE WRONG thing for our cars, after a couple autocrosses I had severe sounds coming from my LSD and tranny. Mobile 1 thinned out so bad once it got really hot that there is no way it was protecting jack in there. Don't put that crap in there...

There are probably other oils that work just as good but you really can't go wrong with GM Synchromesh (or the cheaper but identical penzoil alternative). I'm so pro-synchromesh that I'm convincing my dealership that they are harming people's cars when they put the mobile 1 in.

Your LSD has a Synchro-like conical clutch in it, it generates heat under stress. The hotter it gets the more viscosity it needs to function properly. Unfortunately Mobile 1 thins out at higher temps for some reason. The result is a grinding noise that sounds notuntirely unlike a failing CV joint under tight slow turning.

I'm no expert though... so grain of salt.
