GM Synchromesh is teh ROCK!!!!

hmmm different?
Yea... definately different from the stock feel. It's harsher... you either are in gear or your not, no guessing, or missing (the bushings). The syncromesh... not sure I notice anything, day 1 of having it in there.

I just replaced my fluid with Pennzoil Synchromesh and replaced my shifter bushings with the Corksport Bronze-oil ones. What a HUGE difference! At first I tightened the nuts too much for the bronze-oil bushings but after loosening them a bit, it was smooth shifting. A LOT smoother going from 1st-2nd and also going into reverse. Highly recommended in my book. Also, just going off my experience, buy yourself a vacuum pump, only $11 at K-Mart. Trust me on this.

Allen-

Well, I'll weigh in tonight...picky up the Pennzoil Synchromesh at Autozone after work. They had a hand pump there ($8.99) basically looks like a big syringe with a hose on the end. Second gear locks out on my sometimes now, and it didn't before with the stock fluid. Hopefully this helps!

Otherwise my P5 is going to the dealer on Friday for something else, and I'll talk to them about it then. I asked to have a tech ride with me so they can see what happens.

For the record, I get gear whine that wasn't there before, so I suspect that my Redline 75W90 NS is thinning out and not protecting my gears. Hopefully I'll have better things to report tonight.

UPDATE: switched tonight and went for a 15 minute cruise around my neighborhood. Also ran it up to 50 mph for a bit to warm it up and see if it thins out. Guess what? It didn't! Second gear engages fine -- a little more effort than the rest -- but it slides in and the syncros engaged just fine. It shifted like I remember my test drive being. Whatever's in Syncromesh it's good stuff! Just wish I knew the weight of it. Well, unless my tranny blows up this stuff will be in there until I hit 40,000 miles!

If you take anything from this thread, it's; Use GM/Pennzoil Syncromesh Tranny Fluid. :)

wtf i went to 2 autozones and nobody has even heard of pennzoil syncromesh!
did you mention it was oil, and not a tranny part, heh

wha!? oh man its motor oil? that might explain some of the confused/blank looks i was getting!

No, it's transmission fluid. if you cannot find it, go to a local GM or Chevy dealership. They'll have the GM version available at slightly higher cost due to "name brand".

Ya thanks t3ase, I was trying autozones first cuz it would be cheaper, but since they all think i'm crazy, i guess i'm stuck goin to a dealership. I read an old thread of yours where you gave the mazda dealership the syncromesh and had them put it in for you. They give you a hard time about it?
I'm thinking about having them do that for the transmission fluid and oil changes. I could change my own oil but my dealership is actually cool and doesn't give me a hard time about my mods or warranty. So I like to throw alil service their way but I'd want them to use Syncromesh and Mobil 1 for my fluids.

NOOB Questions:

1) Can you add the syncromesh fluid to the tranny while the front end is up on jack stands, or does the car need to be on level ground in order to add fluid?

1a) If its okay to add syncromesh fluid while the car is in the air, can I add the full 2.9 quarts?

2) What happens if I try and add more than 2.9 quarts to the car does the excess spill out of the fill hole? Or is it impossible to add more than 2.9 quarts?

Thanks guys, trying to get this done for the first time this weekend

1.) Yes it's ok to fill it on jackstands.

1a.) Fill it with 2.9 qts.

2.) Any excess will spill out.

SWEET (2thumbs) Sounds idiot proof to me!!...just what i need

Thanks Alan

Not exactly! Be careful when you fill it back up. Because the front of the tranny is up a little bit if you fill it up until it spills out you will be putting in much more than 2.9. Measure out 3 and use absolutely no more than that and you can have the front jacked up.

Well I have exactly three quarts of syncromesh so I don't think i can overfill it

okay, so i went to a chevy dealership today and bought 4 quarts of GM Syncromesh tranny fluid. the guy at the counter asked me what car i was putting it in and i told him a protege. he said it made for gm 1500 transmissions. i'm not too sure if i got what everyone else got. is there any other kind of gm syncromesh? my mechanic is going to drain the old and pour in the new but i'm leary now because of what the guy behind the counter told me. basically i'm looking for reassurance that what i got is what i need and that it won't hurt anything. it doesn't have a specific weight to it or anything its just in a black bottle like oil and it has a blue label and it says it semi-synthetic and has some anti friction stuff. just want to know what is up before i go and destroy my tranny.
