Gear set for drag racing...

talk more about how loud is the noise with straight cut gears

is it like when you go in reverese? is the whine that loud but on all gears?
if so, maybe is not as bad as thought...

yes ur right its about that loud. my friends wrx had 1st and 2nd straight cut like that.

it is ******* loud then!!
wow

maybe not so much for daily driving...can't imagine that sound 24/7 on the highway

What sucks is that these guys get no recognition by U.S. magazines, even with this times. Good job (2thumbs)

The GTX 4th gear is supposed to be dis-continued or unavailable. Most were replacing 3rd & 4th for strength and 5th for top speed. Now I only see 3rd and 5th being replaced. Is 4th not a potential problem?

We use junkyard transmission parts.

Thumbs up to that. The first thing I will do is a have a junkyard tranny waiting incase mine goes as well. It's the easiest fix.

I have a slightly used (2000 miles only) GTX 5th gear, if anyone wants one, PM me, please? Thanks.

hi guys , i currently run a straight cut gear similar to the par 3rd gear after i blew over 7 stock 3rds , being japanese GTX or Aust. ones...

the 4th geards i dont beleive to be any stronger ,i have several gears on my shelf , most of them GTX ones from used GTX 4wd boxes, i also have about 3 sets of 5th gear , which a .717:1 and are really good for top end and freeway RPM,. i run the 4.105:1 final drive and with this gear i get 2750rpm at 60mph(100k) on 17 inch mags

if anyone wants to purchase any gears let me know i have so many, i have about 7 spare sets of 3rd gears with no damage.

i now run a mazdaspeed 4 spider clutchpack LSD , which i have had a billet housing made as i split it similar to the protege guys, this is not the same diff at all its an old motorsport item , i havent blown 3rd gear sicne the straight cut fit , here is a pic of them below..note the bits next to the gears are the insides of the 1.5 way LSD

straight cut 3rd is the only way to go.

PS - this is in my 323 BF 87 wagon which runs a forged BPT with a gt3071 turbo, its done a 12.34@123 on toyo semi's.

You must be doing something wrong because we have so many cars down here in PR running over 400whp and 10-9 second 1/4mile times and +129mph traps. This is where they start to fail after some abuse.

Of course, straight cuts is the way to go...but...whats the cost of them??

X2. 123 trap is good for a low 11 on a tire.

^ what LSD is that? I might be interest to make another one if it's been taking good abuse and not breaking. I broke a welded LSD so something like this will help significantly. BTW isn't the 3rd straight cut really loud?

Straight cut will sound like you are in reverse. Its a tight sound when your just strolling through a parking lot and nobody has any idea were the sound is coming from.

But not tight when you have a headache....I would rather a Helical cut if it doesn't compromise it that much.

It will be part time if you only install 3rd gear...you could always rev up a bit more and jump from 2nd to 4th.

Anyway...GTXWGN...where you got them and for how much?

yeah guys its loud , but u can choose when to use it,,,when someone wants to race u just go to 3rd and they know u mean business and back off hehe

it was around 600NZ for the gear , and the PAR ones are 750 a pair...they are 1.24:1 ratio.

the lsd u cannot buy anymore, this one has a billet case made from solid billet steel alloy, its been nitrided aswell and shimmed up , it will never blow its just so beefy i cant see it going anywhere , i was running a welded up locker..

i dont know why i keep blowing 3rds it was just how it went, i dont have any issues anymore so it was worth it..

i know my car can go faster i have only done a 2.06 60foot so far , i just need some decent slicks and im sure the MPH will go up to over 126 and be in the 11's once i sort it all out, the 12.3 was full street spec.
