GB: Mazdaspeed3 Mazdaspeed Cold Air Intakes

By the way...once this is on should the computer be reset? If so how long does the battery have to be disconnected for it to reset?

you should reset the computer and 10 minutes should do it, just turn the headlights on to get all the power out of the car.

oh man, and I wanted to wait for dyno's. I may be in on this one, I will let you know, awesome deal captain. Hopefully someone will get a dyno done asap.

Dyno coming tomorrow. Actually, I can tell you the % gain in 3rd and 4th gear. 1st and 2nd will have to wait for the rain to stop here; too much slippage and 5th and 6th are too fast for me to test. If you all are wondering, I use Auterra Dyno-Scan SW for the Dyno test.

I ran 6 runs today before installing the CAI. Mean values are:

3rd Gear: 224 HP @ 5300 RPM, 238.8 ft lbs @ 4233 RPM
4th Gear: 253 HP @ 5500 RPM, 255.8 ft lbs @ 4333 RPM

These numbers represent the power and torque at the wheels. The value to focus on will be the % difference from the stock numbers to the numbers I get tomorrow with the CAI installed.

Numbers with MS CAI to come tomorrow, Saturday, 3-2-2007.

I installed my MazdaSpeed CAI today and man, it makes a very noticable difference. The car pulls harder in lower RPMs now and third gear now loses traction on wet pavement whereas it didn't before. I didn't have time today to test the poer/torque with the CAI caus I already got crap from the wife for taking 2 hours to get the baseline numbers above and 2 hours to install the CAI. I had to drive out towards Mt. Rainier to do the test runs. No traffic out there.

I will also try and post intake manifold temperature differences from stock to upgraded with MS CAI.

Ok, got it! I ran 3 runs in 3rd gear WITH the MazdaSpeed CAI. Here are my results (Mean values of 3 runs each):

Stock
3rd Gear: 224.0 HP @ 5300 RPM, 238.8 ft-lbs @ 4233 RPM

With MS CAI
3rd Gear: 247.5 HP @ 5200 RPM, 273.0 ft-lbs @ 4267 RPM

The gains

HP: 10%
Torque: 14.3%

Based on Mazda's baseline figures of 263 HP @ 280 ft-lbs Torque, the new numbers should reflect my measured gains and would be 290.5 HP @ 320.1 ft-lbs of Torque!!! That is a gain of 27.5 HP and 20.1 ft-lbs of Torque!

I will do more tests when it dries out here and try doing it in all gears. BTW, I only took measurements without wheel spin. In some cases, I had to feather the throttle to prevent it.

I used to live in Washington, trips to Rainier in the MS3 would be sweet.

(lol)

Those numbers look real promising. Dumb ? but did you have to remove the front bumper to install the MS CAI? I'm not shy to take things apart as I did the same thing on my RX-8 to install some lower grills.

TIA.

You do not have to remove the bumper but it makes it easier. Those are really good gains, I wonder what forth looks like. How much variation to you see between runs.

The numbers varried from the mean by +/-:

Stock:
HP: 2.3%
Torque: 5.6%

With MS CAI:
HP: 7.5%
Torque: 11.3%

I believe, the higher variation in the MS CAI test is due to too much tire slippage. I will re-do the runs today if I can.

I second Dread's comments. You don't need to remove the bumper. The hardest part is getting up into the area behind the fog lamp and removing the stock air director.

good to see you got pleasing results! nice news for all involved.

New results on dry pavement. I couldn't do 4th gear though; it just takes too much time and my wife was already ragging at me for going to do the 3rd gear test. I ran 3 solid runs in 3rd gear today with the MS CAI on dry pavement. All the numbers below are mean values of 3 runs each.

HP/Torque Dyno:
Stock (3-2-2007, wet pavement, no slippage)
3rd Gear: 224.0 HP @ 5300 RPM, 238.8 ft-lbs @ 4233 RPM
Variation HP: +/- 2.3%, Torque: +/- 5.6%

With MS CAI (3-2-2007, wet pavement, some slippage)
3rd Gear: 247.5 HP @ 5200 RPM, 273.0 ft-lbs @ 4267 RPM
Variation HP: +/- 7.5%, Torque: +/- 11.3%

With MS CAI (3-3-2007, dry pavement, no slippage)
3rd Gear: 253.1 HP @ 5267 RPM, 264.5 ft-lbs @ 4300 RPM
Variation HP: +/- 2.2%, Torque: +/- 1.1%

The gains:

3-2-2007
HP: 10% (Equivalent to 290.5 HP compared to Mazda's advertised stock 263 HP)
Torque: 14.3% (Equivalent to 320.1 ft-lbs compared to Mazda's advertised stock 280 ft-lbs)

3-3-2007
HP: 13% (Equivalent to 297.2 HP compared to Mazda's advertised stock 263 HP)
Torque: 10.7% (Equivalent to 310.1 ft-lbs compared to Mazda's advertised stock 280 ft-lbs)

Those results seem too good to be true, how accurate are those things? I want that intake bad.

When you look at the differences between stock and MS CAI, I believe it is very accurate. The actual HP/Torque numbers may not highly accurate, but they are very consistent. The last set of numbers I posted have very little variance between runs.
