Gas Cap problem

Recently went to fill the tank on my new 09 and couldn't open the gas cap. My wife made jokes about the bowflex not being used in our basement but I even got someone else to attempt with no luck. After 10 minutes of pain I finally got it open. Has anyone else expirnced this problem?

Yup. Well known problem (and totally annoying) It happens when it is not screwed in perfectly straight. Many of us had to pry open and break off the cap.

If I were you I would take it back to the dealer and get a replacement cap. After I broke mine, I went back to the dealer and got a free replacement. Thankfully, it hasn't happened since.

Yes, take it back to dealer for a free replacement. I experienced twice before already, after read few posts here, took the car for a cap replacement. The new one works perfectly.

It is sad to see that Mazda hasn't fixed this problem in the 09 models...

Unless they are totally oblivious, they MUST know about the problem. (when I took mine back to the dealer, I didn't even have to explain it to them, they already knew.)

Technically it is not a safety issue so it probably won't be recalled. But it is also one of the most annoying ones because it often leaves with the prospect of running out of gas trying to get to the dealer in time.

Yikes! Gas cap problem today!

For some reason today I dared go waaay below the "E" level and guess what?
Gas cap was stuck and I was very late for work. Dealer (fortunately very close to where I was) replaced the cap which was recovered under warranty. I couldn't quite remember the look of the original cap but I seem to noticed it was different that is the cap and some other stuff inside the gas pipe(?) which makes sense after reading the earlier postings. My wife originally accused my of twisting the cap to tight but I know I didn't esp. after reading these postings.

New to the forum, just got my 5 2 weeks ago and I love it so far! Anyway, I had this same problem, took it back to the dealer they replaced it no problem. But they also took the time to show me what I was doing wrong and why it was happening. So i thought I would leave this info here for everyone else as I don't recall anyone explaining how these silly caps work. Any way after you here the clicks from turning the cap to the right, to then remove the cap you turn left until you feel it move 1/4 turn and then just pull it straight out. So far it has been working for me every time (of course after I broke the first cap to learn this lol) Hope this info will be of some help. After we get some nice weather I will post a pic of my new baby if I can figure out how to post pics

Thanks for that man, you are the 1st person to actually explain how to rectify this problem.

I really appreciate it. Our 5 came home today too, so I have done the following:

1. added all weather mats
2. stubby antenna
3. awaiting dvd headrests
4. tinting done, 35% front, 20% everywhere else
5. planning to add HID and LED lights

2009 Gas Cap replaced

I had the same problem about a month after I got my 5. I was at a gas station and it took my about 10-15 minutes to get the cap off. Right after that I called the Mazda service department, took it in, and they replaced the cap under the warranty.

On our way home with our new 08 M5GT on Friday, the infamous gas cap problem occured. I blamed it on the salesmen who put gas in the car (he had forgot) until finding this forum.

Next day, I was at our local Mazda dealer, getting a new gas cap. Thanks to this forum, I know I wasn't the only one who felt like an idiot at the gas station.

That's almost exactly what happened to us (same day, too!)--except it was an 09 instead of an 08! They filled it up at the dealership and when we went to fill it up at home it was jammed solid. Once the service guys showed us the trick to putting the cap on it was smooth...too bad they don't teach the sales guys that! Got our new cap today at least!

yeah.. there is a trick to it. took me a couple times to figure it out, but ive never replaced ours.

So this is still a problem on the 09's!!???
Damn, I just bought one.
Traded in the Protege.... Family getting too big.

I was sooooo close to empty and far from home but I managed to squeeze every drop to get home then take the car in to the dealer the next day.
Hate to see it happen to anyone really far from home out in the middle of nowhere far from Mazda. It's under warranty.

Isn't that the problem has been corrected for some time already?

Would it be possible to post a picture of the newest design or the part number of the one where the problem is corrected? Many 09s should have a "good" one already so no need to change.

The correction should be visible I imagine

I can post a pic of the "old" one to compare if needed (I have 2 :D, I've never experienced this issue, but that does not mean it could not happen (boom08))
