I have a plain ol 09 Mazda 3 hatch and was seeing people with these garrett turbos. I really want to dress up my engine and it seems this turbo is in high regard. Any thoughts on these and anyone know where I can get a good deal?

your going to need a full turbo kit... not just a turbo, before you go doing anything i would say sit back and do research, and when you think you know enough. learn a lot more! a turbo is a difficult thing to get right on a car. But there are some places that make turbo kits for the 2.3l, so google it. i believe tri-point makes a kit that will get you some really good power numbers, and look good while doing it. Best of luck to you

i would absolutely do your research, i thought i did my research but i was wrong. i put a kit on my car but even after a year I'm still not tuned. i do have the 2.0L but still... Definitely do your research and best of luck!!

I figured a turbo would get me the kinda power i wanted. Can i get similar power without it?

research... thats what you need to do. Look into doing full bolt ons. And cams. then youll be at about max, any further and youll need pistons and more...

Definitely do your research, it is far more complicated than "throwing a turbo on"

No need for a kit if you understand how a turbocharger works- build your own setup and learn to tune it.

while self tuning is all good and dandy, There is currently very few programs that will allow you to tune a 2.0, the only one i know of is MazdaEdit. And it runs at about 800$. And yes if you know enough you can build a turbo kit. But if the pieces arnt matched well, you could end up blowing it to pieces. Much easier to just get a kit and then upgrade from there.

I guess I consider it easy... but I've been doing this over a decade and have a dyno at my disposal whenever I want to use it. :D

MazdaEdit? Never heard of it- haven't done any tuning on Mazdas yet. I'll have to look it up. I was thinking more along the lines of the AEM FIC. It's about $400, and is designed specifically to lay custom fuel/timing maps (retard only) on top of the OEM maps once positive boost comes online. $800 isn't too much of a stretch past that if you get full programmability. Never skimp on tuning.
