G-series 5sp Transmission: Complete Teardown & Rebuild w/LSD & 5th Gear Swap

P5 trans use a open differential not a lsd. But the probe transmission needs a notch machined out for the lsd to fit. Thsts the only diff.

First of all, incredible write-up! I don't know if I will ever be brave enough or have the time to rebuild my transmission, but you're the balls for doing it and showing us how!

Question about the 626 5th gears...are these the same size as the gtx 5th gears? I know the GTX are "hardened," but I don't need serious gears to handle tons of power, I am just looking for a taller 5th. Is the GTX just as tall as the 626, or is there a difference?

everyone keeps saying 626 5th gear. but no one ever says which one it is. there are a bunch of different mtx's used. which one specifically are we looking for?

right. there are a few MPGs and the benefit of a quieter exhaust note at high speed cruising. But I want to know if the GTX and 626 gears are the same size. Anyone know?

In the first post, the part numbers are listed.

part #'s do nothing when you plan on yanking them from a junkyard. ;) i need to know what body and engine 626. as there are like 4 different G series MTX's used in the different 626's. not even including the H and F series also used in them.

I believe at least one of the gears is from a 91. Jason at Onlinemazdaparts could probably help you out. I would also try googling the part numbers. I saw some info when I did that, but I am planning to purchase mine, so I didn't pay attention.

im kinda hoping its the 2.2 sohc F2 G series mtx in the 88-92's, as i have one in my garage just laying around. there actually the exact same trans in 88-92 2.2 n/a probes and mx6's also.

i have my trans in parts right now. tore it down last night to install my M factory LSD. and then saw this thread today. great timing! just trying to figure out if i can take advantage of stuff i already have just laying around or not.

I have a question. I am installing a welded MSP LSD in my 02 P5. Do I need to have the pink Speedo gear on the diff before I install or can I do without? I bought it with the bearings on but no speedo gear.

Any help?

The LSD i bought came the same way and I have a P5 also. The bearing will have to be pulled and the speedo gear needs to be installed with some minor grinding done to the tabs on the topside and the top surface of the speedo gear or the bearing wont fully seat or be able to rotate. You can use the original gear from the P5 diff if it's not cracked. I just put the trans together this week. Check this thread;

The pictures are AWESOME!!! I think I am going to see how much the guys at ATC here in Austin can get me the new diff and if they can weld it up too... I am pretty sure mine blew out on Thursday... :(

best thread ever.
it looks like they are using a 626/mx-6/probe tranny and installing the LSD.
i'm going to do this exact same thing on my MP3 since it doesn't have ABS.

thanks for posting!

I'm right in the thick of it with my car right now. I ordered new 3rd and 4th gear synchros as well as new bearing for the primary and secondary shafts (since I'm in there already). So far, so good. I need a shop to take apart the gears and put them back together though. Plus I need to get the LSD TIG welded. I hope to have mine put back together in the next week. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to chat about the whole affair. LMK.
