My thoughts: The MAZDASPEED is simply the best (fwd or otherwise) performance sedan for the money! Period!!

Yeah..i guess they're trying to compare apples to oranges...

FWD does suck if your looking for pure performance. ever wonder why you don't see any FWD race or sports cars?
Rally racing (both domestic and abroad) have FWD cars competeing and winning, as well as USTCC and European and Australian touring car series. I would call all the FWD cars in any of those series "race cars".

front wheel drive is much easier to learn to take turns in.. rwd however once u master it is much more efficient.. awd.. is just awesome.. takin turns at 50 is just awesome -=)

Well, I can take turns doing 50 with the MP3 NO PROBLEM :)

I'd love to have AWD though for our roads here. I'd have a blast.

And yes, Rear wheel is "technically better" for most sport cars. But, %95 of normal drivers don't know how to drive them anyhow and are better off in a FWD car.

Check this out.............(my thoughts, and facts)

The only negatives coming from anyone's mouth would be from the mouth of an individual that hasn't had the pleasure of piloting a MAZDASPEED. FWD cars are raced all over in their respective classes.

I don't see any FWD road race cars in the GT classes....

there is a power limit on FWD before torque steer becomes so great that it ruins the driving dynamic of the car.

RWD also has an advantage with weight transfer if you're dragging or otherwise looking for hard acceleration.

There are many advantages to FWD. A couple of the primary ones:

Better traction in inclement weather (more weight over the driven wheels).
Better space utilization (roomier interiors)

From a pure performance standpoint, there are a few drawbacks. In particular the front-heavy weight distribution limits outright handling and causes additional understeer. While accelerating, weight is tranferred to the rear of a car, so acceleration out of corners is limited in FWD because traction is lost to the driven tires as weight is removed. Additionally, some steering "feel" is lost because the front wheels are doing so much as opposed to a RWD car (like a BMW) in which the steering hardware is only taking care of steering.

Frankly, for a mass-produced street car, these limitations are fairly minimal. Additionally, different cars handle these limitations differently. Remember, John Cooper did some amazing things with the Austin Mini decades ago and beat many larger and more powerful cars with this basic little FWD car. Mazda has also done amazingly well with the handling and steering feel of the Protege. All else equal, however, a RWD car will have some inherent advantages over a FWD car until the weather gets bad.
