fuel pump?

So I was driving my 95 protege while all of sudden the car just shuts off going to 30 MPH, and will not start back up. It will crank but won't start. My first assumption was the fuel pump, so I took up the back seat and tried the sound test. When I turn the ignition to on, the fuel pump did not make a noise. But when i tried to start it, it made a bit of noise for a split second.

Is it possible for a fuel pump to be dead but still make noise while cranking? Is there a better way to test it?

Check all the fuses, the main relay, did you hear any noise before it shut down? Wrong section by the way.

It kinda sounded like power shutting down. But really loud.

crank the motor over, pop the hood, push the schrader valve and see if fuel comes out
