Fs Ze And The Story of the Uncontrollable Ping

You atmo, af ratio the same in closed loop, it affects only boosted car!

So are you saying that since my car is not boosted, that the ZE regulator won't affect the a/f ratio?? I'm not too familiar with how fuel pressure regulators work...
Thanks for identifying my engine though! So I guess I have an "older version" of the FS ZE.

So I decided to reset the check engine light (for pre-cat) to see if there would be changes in pinging level. Sure enough, when the CEL was off, it pinged a lot more, but when the CEL cam back on, the pinging decreased, back to the levels after I did the coolant flush.

Exhaust cam are the same on japan market and usa and europe his lift is 8mm, intake 8,7. Corksport exhaust cam is 8,7 lift! In our Russian forum we have a vendor from Komsomolsk na Amure its near Japan, he sold used parts from Familia and never see another exhaust cam!

The MSF exhaust cam had the same lift as stock just a different profile.

Yes there was jspec fsde which most refer to as the an fsze, then there was an fsze in the awd sport 20 an I think a few other models but can't remember. The best one was in the msf, it had the special cams just for it but there were only 203 made or something like that

The FS-ZE also came in the eurospec/JDM MPVs for a short period and had there own torque specific cams. I think it also came in the JDM 626, but can't remember 100%.

EDIT: IF you spent the time on the harness your could rig it so that you could go back to stock easily for emissions. The alternative to stop the pinging to death is to get the MP3 ECU flashed.

I'm intrigued! Can you lead me to a thread that shows how to do this??? Also, I think Tweety is right... I already have the MP3 flash, love the performance but still pings! Pinged before and after the flash. It's been so long since I'd had the stock ECU I can't compare which pinged less, but according to the posts on this thread and what I'm experiencing I think it's running excessively lean...

Anyways, if the Fuel Pressure Regulator from the ZE won't change it, anyone know another way to make it more rich without say a piggyback or a standalone?

Was under the impression that you'd be able to modify the MP3 ecu to inject more fuel using a custom flash.

Using off the shelf flash wont work. Im just offering a cheap solution that will make that engine last at least a little longer then it currently will, cause you know cheap solutions solve everything (braindead

Dunno. I meant modify as in flashing it.

I never bothered reading about it as its an American thing. Thought you could use Mpi tuner or something.

I've heard of people flashing ecu's but never seen it done myself. Most people go with ssafc because you can tune it yourself instead of paying someone

I see only 1 MSF in Thailand a few ears ago!

That's not an msf, the msf looks like a blue mp3 with gold wheels.

Google it, it was basicly a mp3 with the motor the mp3 should have got

VERY good looking wheels on that MSF.

OK then, what is the tried and true piggyback for the Mazda Protege5 none-turbo amongst everyone here? Maybe I can spot one in the market place...

Those are actually regular mp3/ first part of 03 msp rims painted gold.

Ssafc is the piggy back you want that's what most people on here run

Don't bother with the version that controls timing as its useless for NA.

There's a lot of small differences between the two otherwise much the same.

Wouldn't adjusting the timing be necessary though if I were to tune the FS ZE to it's "intended" power output without the original ECU? OK, so I'll keep an eye out for a cheap ssafc, until then, wish me luck.

OK so just some other random thoughts...

Can a bad upstream o2 sensor cause lean mixtures? Dirty MAF? I don't have CEL's for either of those, but just wondering...

According to ProtegeFAQ, the exhaust cams on the FS ZE and FS DE are the same, the intake cams are different (this is excluding the Mazda Speed FS ZE which had different intake and exhaust cams than the USDM FS DE). I think rico said the intake was Fsh9 or something... I'm suspicious if my mechanic ever put the right cams in, since at the time he was putting in the FS ZE, he thought it was an FS DE and therefore had the same cams...

So I'm asking how do I check my cams? I'm assuming I have to take off the valve cover and check for Fsh9 stamped somewhere on there? Is this safe to do? The engine swap was done a little over a year ago, so I'm hoping I won't have to replace my valve cover gasket... What's the exhaust cams number?
