ok so I'm trying to pull my factory stereo and I read how to's and other posts about pulling the stereo. I think "ok I did my home work lets go do this." i go out to the car, pop the covers off the din holes and put the tools in. I pull to the side and outward but nothing happens. I have one set of din tools and a set of home made din tools(wire hanger). I have been trying to pull this thing for hours now and nothing is working. Did I miss something, like a screw/bolt that holds the stereo in? I have a protege 5 with the 6 disc changer if that makes a difference. thanks for your help and I love these forums.

Some times the clips on the side get stuck try pushing the tools (the coat hanger is likely not stron enough for this) toward the doors, so basicly put them in and then pull them apart.

Other then that just try wiggling that b**** around.

If you have to you can remove the plastic covering to the dash and get in there a bit better on the side. Be ware that you will have to disconenct the HVAC lines to do this though.

Yup I got the same problem as you, even though I used 2 sets of the tools (4 U shape). After all I realized the clips were bent and no longer in there for pins to pull it out. I just removed the plastic panel under the steering wheel and passenger storage bag, then stick my hand in there and push those clips...then the head unit pops out!!!

Here she sits with that freaking stereo still in there. I went out and got the second paira of tools and I have been yanking at this crap all day. I don't know what is going on with it. I have pulled head units before using this method but never have encountered anything like this.

ok so I finally got the head unit out but there was a cost. Now my head unit doesn't power back on and my keyless entry doesn't work. I'm hoping this is just a fuse issue but the radio fuse looks fine. any thoughts? this has been a good learing experience for me and I thank you guys and gals for your help.

do you mean the factory unit? if so try inserting a cd and see if it powers up. i bumped the knob on my unit do in a pull and no the only way to power up is to hit the radio button or insert a cd. as to the keyless entry if you had the battery disconected all day then you could(remote possibility -no pun) have "lost" the remote to the receiver. use the search feature and you will find the instructions for adding/removing a remote keyless fob-be patient it takes a while and follow the instrutions carfully. also just leave the door open and manipulate the pin switch that way during the programing sequence. hope i helped

I had the same problem trying to remove the radio while using only 2 of the U tools but after I got 2nd set of tools it became easier but it still was stuck, but I managed to get it out a few days ago.

Wow, that is very odd. I had a hell of a time getting my stock radio out this past weekend. I pulled down the surround but did not disconnect the HVAC controls. Had to wedge a screw driver in the side to get the pins to push back in then I had to have my wife pull the radio out while I was reaching behind it and pushing as that thing just did not want to come out. Finally it popped out. The power issue is quite odd as is the remotes not working. I'd try what torq13 recommended.

Are you replacing this with an aftermarket unit? Have you tried installing the new one to see if the plug is broken/fuse or did you damage the stock radio.
