Front Seat Comfort.

2014.5 CX-5 GX FWD
I searched for and test drove quite a number of CX-5's before I finally bought one. There were many things to pay attention too especially buying used. Seat comfort was important but on relatively short drives nothing came up as a red flag for me. Also since it's a different car than what I owned the seats were going to feel different anyway. I drove the sport and touring models.

I've had my used 2014 CX-5 Sport (2.0) for about two weeks and I can't seem to find a comfortable seating position. I am somewhat narrow, 33" waist/180lbs, and I find the butt side-bolstering a tad narrow too and the flat part not that supportive. I can slightly feel a metal wire across my thighs. The back part seems to be too far reclined or too far forward. I've been sliding seats back and forth, up and down and cannot get comfortable.

Has anyone done any mods to improve the seat? I'm not looking to buy seat toppers. I don't want to be lifted up or forward on the seat.

I was wondering if there is a difference in the two seats (sport/touring) as far as frame structure and padding. Is one more firm or larger/smaller than the other, is the side bolstering larger or smaller? My seat foam is supported by springs on the bottom and back. I seem to recall my old protege having a metal base/cup holding the foam which I assume offered better support.

I find the seats very supportive, but I have yet to find a sweet spot. I am still constantly adjusting everything and I am getting close. For me, the height adjustment made the most difference. It seems like as the seat height goes up, the seat actually tilts forward a little bit, making the seat flatter. This put less pressure under my thighs near my knee and I didn't feel as cramped from the side bolsters.

This is where we miss the memory seat unless you're the lone drive for your CX-5 all the time...

I'm similar in build, except 195# and 5'10.5" with a 30-34" waist depending on cut/bulk, and I find my CX-5 seats to be firm but comfortable. All Japanese cars I've had have had firmer seats, so that was expected. I don't feel springs or anything funky. I have a Touring model with cloth seats.

Seat comfort is the only elusive positive for me in owning the CX-5. Even with more power adjustments on the GT, I continue to struggle finding the most comfortable position. Like CX_Pete, the seats are plenty supportive and my back feels pretty good when taking the curves. It's the bottom cushion that is a bit too firm. I have tried cushions and hate them. I'm trying to live w/it as I don't want to swap w/my wife and return to driving the Odyssey (although she wouldn't mind zipping around in the Mazda).

YES! I hate when I take the wife to a fancy restaurant and the valet parking attendant moves my seat. It takes me too long of a time to find that 'CORRECT' spot again. Makes want to go and take back the tip. They should not adjust anything!
End of rant.

I love the front seats in the CX5 as I find them very comfortable.

Can't say the same about our CRV.... but if I was obese I'd probably find the CRV seats more favorable.

I agree the seat foam is high quality and very supportive. After 3 1/2 years of ownership the seats are just as comfortable and supportive as when they were new.

That's good to hear. They're definitely of higher quality of those that were in my 2014 3. Granted those were fabric, so not a more direct comparison, but both of us find the CX5s seats much more comfortable.

Thanks for the feedback.

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the seat quality (firmness and support) between the sport and touring? I notice they have different stitching patterns so I assume the foam is layed out different.

I felt , the curve in the seat where our neck comes is not proper. There is no support for neck.. and I am not sure how to get proper neck support.

Before I bought, I test drove both the Touring and GT. I found the cloth seats in the Touring to be softer and much more comfortable than the leather GT which were firmer. That's one of the reasons I bought a Touring. Not sure in the Sport is any different than the Touring though.

I agree. I think this has something to do with reducing whiplash during an accident.

May i suggest this:

@CX5_pete: yes , it is a good option. From where did you buy it ? Amazon ?

As per manual

Headrests
For your safety, the front seats are equipped with active headrests that are
not adjustable forward or backward, only up and down. An active headrest
is designed to move forward in the event of a collision to close the gap
between your head and the headrest (to reduce the possibility of whiplash) ""

how does this active headrest move forward when accident happens? (boom01)

Amazon is a good place to shop. I got mine (not the Hello Kitty one) at Walmart. It's great if you sleep in your car often.

There is a lot of unseen technology integrated into every CX-5. The seat is designed to partially collapse in the event of a collision and this hinging motion uses your bodies momentum to move the headrest forward. Especially helpful if you get rear-ended at 50 mph!

Yeah, 34in waist and my butt gets sore after 1.5 - 2 hours

I wonder if the heating pads (for those with heated seats) stiffen the seating surface because my non-heated seats are super supportive and comfortable. I can't say this about many cars because I'm 6'-04" and 210 lbs. Most automotive seats are not this comfortable or supportive for me (especially after 3-4 years of use).
