why is it that only some people have to have a front license plate? my ins papers say in big bold letters "Front license plate still required" - but I see everything from lambos to custom cars to beaters without them.... is this a WA state thing? anyone have any answers?

I'ma take the s*** off and see what happens..... (thumb)

that was my first appearance mod..remove the license plate!! Have done it to all the vehicles ive owned. Not sure how olympia is but seattle cops dont seem to care about miniscule crap like no front license plate, they didnt even mention my blue led mirror blinkers
Now wenatchee on the other hand is a different story, every time i go back to visit my dad i make sure i put the plate in the windshield and black tape over the blinkers

My registration also says front plate still required, but the only cop ( a stater ) that asked about the plate, i gave him some bs story that i was backed into and the mounting bracket for the plate was broken since the holes in my bumper dont align with the plates, that was all there was to that
might as well take it off, if they pull you over for it they are just going to give you a fix-it ticket

I want to take mine off too. I think my car will look SO much better without it on.

The only time I didn't have my front plate on (I was running to NAPA before I began my hiboost install), I was pulled over.

You're tempting fate.

On my Miata I was pulled over for no plate and several other people I know have been also. I don't think it looks so bad on the Protege 5, but it looks awful on a Miata so people are more lilkely to take the risk.

yeah, I go to school at Mount Saint Mary's University and the cops up here in Frederick Maryland are absolute tools... I got away with the first time I was pulled over by using the same "someone backed into my car" story. The second time he hit me with a sixty dollar fine and a repair order. Absolute crap.

While not wanting to have the plate is an asthetic choice, you're still breaking the law. Essentially, the timer is ticking the minute you take it off.

I do know that in NY, State Troopers will not pull you over for lack of a front plate unless they suspect something else (They'll use it as pretxt to get you to stop). Local police is another matter entirely, and it changes from town to town. Some don't care, while others will pull you over for going three over the speed limit.

i have a solution for some that dont want it on the front of there cars. You can have it in your car but must be visible from the front, so you can buy little suction cup with lil hooks on them and attach it to ur license plate and stick it all the way to the bottome of ur window on the right side.

yeah, that's the way I had it on my old 91 buick regal, cops never pulled me over, but then again, nobody notices a car like that anyway...

By law in washington you have to have the front license plate atachet to the front bumper or surrounding area. I know people who have gotten tickets for improperly displaying them in the window. However most police either do not care or do not notice. Problem is that everyonce and a while one does care and does notice and will write you a ticket. I took mine of my truck however my 323 accually looks worse without it.

States that require front/back license plates:

Alaska, American Samoa, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, British Columbia, Manitoba (newly issue plates), New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan <hr> States that require only a rear license plate :

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virgin Islands, West Virginia, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba (New plates are front/back in 1997), Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, Yukon Territory

I've been up here for 4 months with alabama plates and I havn't been bothered yet. When I get my washington plates I'm planning to leave it off until I get pulled over for it. Does anyone know if it's legal to bend the plates? Like as long as the state name and the registration sticker are still visible, can you bend the top or bottom to make the plate smaller?

I have mind put behind the left side windshield over the dash since Dec 2002 when I got my P5. No problem so far. I've got pulled over twice, one for minor speeding (no ticket issued) and one for running a yellow light (illegal in WA, no ticket issued), both time the officers said nothing about my plate. I guess I am lucky so far.
But if you live in Wenatchee, Ellensburg, Pullman, Colfax, or Spokane, don't do this.
There aren't enough donuts shops in those towns I've mentioned above and the cops have way too much time in their hands to pick on anything they can from your car.

I've had mine off in Ohio for 20,000 + miles without a problem. *Knocks on wood* Even got pulled over once for speeding and they didn't mention it. Don't give them any other reason to want to pull you over and unless they're trying to meet a quota they probably won't bother

Off-topic.
When the cops here want to "meet the quota," they usually station at the left side shoulder to catch those cars with just the driver alone driving on the HOv lane. Easy & plenty to catch, high on the ticket amount, and not much way for the driver to talk themselves out of it either on spot or at the court.

I got a hundred something dollar ticket for no front plate. But this was issued the same time I got my ticket for going 20 over.

But prior to that I went about an year without being bothered.

It looks gay and I refuse to drill holes into my bumper.

I come from Georgia, a state w/o this fascist s***!

PS
I really don't think it's fascist, but this word is bandied around so wantonly I thought I'd use it. :D

It still looks gay. I'm not going to do it. I'll risk the fine.

I have never put a front plate on any thing i have ever owend and in my 15 years of driving i have been stoped for it once. It was a stater, he just wanted a reason to pull me over. I still didnt get a ticket
