BIKE RACKS???? ARE YOU NUTS?

Mazda is not Audi, and Audi is really a different target audience. Mazda is really trying to become about affordable performance. I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong since I do not have any data to back me up, but I believe the point still stands that the s4 would be more performance oriented than the rs4. That is to say, drivers being equal, the s4 driver would have a decided advantage over the rs4 driver in weight penalty and handling capability.

The RS4 is a much upgraded version of the S4 Avant which is the wagon. The RS4 isn't the wagon version of the S4 since the S4 comes in a sedan and wagon. The point should be that Audi makes both a sedan and wagon form of their cars... which happen to be extremely performance oriented.

I find it very hard to believe that Mazda will produce a Mazdaspeed Protege5, if for no other reason than that no one will pay more money for a Mazdaspeed Protege5 than a Mazdaspeed Protege- the sedan will handle better and go faster if for no other reason than it weighs less and is a more rigid platform than the wagon. The current price model at Mazda puts a premium on the wagon over the sedan. Why pay more for a performance vehicle that would be inferior to a performance vehicle of the same brand? As much as I would like to see a Mazdaspeed Protege5, I just can't see that happening.
Mazda has said there will be a Mazdaspeed 6, but I wouldn't hold my breath on a Mazdaspeed 6 wagon variant, much more likely to be the sedan or hatchback.
There will be a 2003.5 mid-year model change and the colors have been discussed here already. I've also heard that the front fascia will be changed on the mid-year release as well. To those that are grousing about "too many" Mazdaspeeds, I believe they will always be a relatively limited number as it allows for less strict emissions regulations on limited release vehicles.

Its all he said, she said, but I wouldn't hold your breath on a Mazdaspeed Protege5.
I bit earlier on the S4 sedan vs. RS4 (not sure what I was thinking) Audi part of this thread- the comparison should have rightly been S4 vs S4 Avant. However earlier posters indicating that a wagon is stiffer than a sedan need to rethink that assertion. I'm not saying it is not possible, but the 3 box sedan design is more rigid than a 2 box wagon design. You can do things like rear tower strut braces, etc to improve rigidity, but there is generally more flex in a wagon than in a sedan.
Not every iteration of every Mazda model will get a Mazdaspeed version. Could Mazda do a Mazdaspeed Protege5? Sure. Will Mazda? I won't believe a word until I see a press release from Mazda. I trust my source.
