I have been told that Fram is a crappy oil filter.

Everyone I ask says that its junk, but they cant give me a fu*ken reason!

My dad has been using them forever and has never had a problem with them.

Whats the deal?

the glue breaks down and lets pieces of carboard and filter into your engine oil, good enought reason for me, i use purtolator or mobil

Fram is crap. We took a bunch of filters apart to compare them to the nissan ones and it had cardboard internals. I use Purlator Pure One. Its got all metal internals like the dealers use.

Fram is probably really "OK", but you can do better for the same money. They do appear to have cut costs in recent years. they have:

1. Cardboard endcaps instead of metal ones like most everyone else. Although some OE filters do this too.
2. Less filtering media inside than most everybody else.
3. Cheap bypass and antidrain back valves.
4. Have been known to put in smaller media from smaller filters in bigger filters.
5. Those new X2's that come in cans, have been shown by some to show a huge pressure drop at the filter. Filters great - but at the expense of oil pressure.

Yeah the Frams use carboard backing for the filter material. We banned them a few years back for motorcycle racing because they were literally blowing apart. I think they have sinced fixed that problem, but they still use carboard in there.

you also want to be careful (with all filters) that the filter doesn't leave that first seal in the center on your engine. my friend did that with his Fram filter and ended up double sealing the filter and it blew off... :D it prolly had more to do with this over-torquing the filter but it was still a Fram and still funny!!!! (stupid)

i just put a K&N filter in....
didn't use the suggested replacement....
used HP-1010 instead of HP-1008
only diff is the 1010 is about 2 inches longer....but fits perfect...

Use the OEM filters if you can, they are usually higher quailty than most filters you can buy in the store.

I picked up some Japan-made filters for our cars on Ebay, after searching this site for some part numbers.

There was a bunch of them on sale on Ebay (they were all lots - 5-10 filters auction) at that time. Got the pretty cheap too :)

Check out the Wix 51356 (V-6 sized filter). New series have semi-synthetic 'T03" filter media, and a red silicone antidrainback valve. Very good filtering, lots of inlet hole area for good overall flow and minimal pressure drop (it has to get INTO the filter can before it can come back out), and they're readily available at the local autozone for less than six bucks.Don't cheap out on getting a good filter of whatever brand to save the cost of a Big Mac! Engines cost LOTS more.
I JUST installed a larger filter (today, haven't even run the car yet), a Wix 51334, to try for even better flow and filtering. Might not work, cuz the upward tilted filter empties out in spite of the antidrainback valve, and big filters make for start up rattles while they're re-filling. I'll keep y'all posted

From everything I've read on these forums...OEM is the way to go. You can swap the Mazda6 6 cylinder filter for ours (I believe) - same thread size, just longer.

Can anyone confirm that???

nope

the mazda6 v6 is a Ford Duratec block, it does not share the thread/gasket size with the Protege engines.

HOWEVER, the older Mazda K-series engine's oil filter (626, MX-3, MX-6, etc) does in fact fit our engines, and it's about an inch taller than the Protege's OE filter.

that's probably where you got mixed up, it's the old Mazda K-series, NOT the Mazda6's Duratec-based engine.

You can buy the OEM oil filters from mazdastuff.com for $5.50 each (my local dealer wants over $10 for them). I just bought a year's worth with shipping included and it comes out to $7.25 each.

Zoom & Linux...thanks for correcting me! I couldn't remember and it didn't seem right...I hafta call my dealer and see what they want for a few of them. Otherwise Mazdastuff will get more of my business.

Thanks again guys!
