FM Turbo

OK.

Who has this installed in a '01-'03 Protege, and what kind of mileage do you have.

Any issues?

Are you happy?

No issues in general with FM users from historical posts (which you could search). Fit and finish...quality of materials...customer service....instructions....all A1+.

As long as FM users use the kits within the specified specs (6psi). Anyone that has had problems....its because of not following the specs. Its an extremely reliable kit....

As for milege.....you don't go FI if you are concerned about mileage :).

Actually, I'm kinda curious about this, too. =) But for my car, it would be a 'set and forget' turbo. IE, I'd set the boost to 6psi, keep it there, and tune the fuel appropriately, then not touch the damn thing again. ;)

YP5 Toronto.

Sorry. I ment how much mileage on the car since the turbo was installed.

But, MPG should still be good. As long as you don't boost all the time.

How is yours YP5, compared to not having a turbo?

Look at my sig, I own a TurboII, and I used to own a Volvo 740 Turbo that was boosted to one full bar. =) My TurboII is the actually fast car, now, and the Protege is just for driving around town, and the occasional romp around on a dirt pit or the track. ;)

Sometimes I forget I view the boards with the sigs turned off, just too much crap to filter through.

I can tell by your reply that you know how easy it is to 'upgrade' a boosted car.

An entirely different car......my car is 2 years old with 61,000 KM... with the new clutch, LSD, Flywheel and now the turbo...its a brand new car...with that brand new car feeling!

I am extremely happy with the Hiboost Kit and installing it yourself has it's own gratification.

Yeah, that little trimmer slot on the Saab APC I had in my 740 kept creeping higher and higher, somehow! ;) I have no idea why... Hehee. But yes, I know why you say that it's hard to keep boost under control; It surely is addictive! However, the Protege is a different animal than most of the other cars I've owned, and won't be so happy running at high boost without significant upgrades, so I'm thinking of keeping it down low in boost, just 'cause I have no reason to romp on that car as much as I do my TurboII. =)

i have 31,000 miles of which, 20,000 miles on my car with the FM kit. I myself have been to visit FM's shop. The people there assured me that the car would run well over 100,000 miles on the existing setup. They have testimonials from people with Miatas that have nearly 200,000 miles on the odometer with zero turbo caused reliability issues.

If you are running the FM kit with the fuel pressure regulator provided, you will be safe to run 6 psi on 91 octane. The kits designer, Corky Bell (of Maximum Boost fame) has stated that he believes 8 psi is perfectly safe on 93 octane or higher. Regardless of this, the protege is going to be FM's wintertime "project car" so to speak as they look for thier own fuel and timing solution akin to what they have done for the Miata.

oh and, besides myself, a few of the users with this kit are Port City MP3, LinuxRacr, 1st MP3 in NH, 02p5 and StuttersC. You may also want to pm users Keith@FP and TurboDog's Dad - they'll have all the information about the kit you could ever want.

captain.

What does the car feel like now with the turbo?

it is a little more than three seconds faster to 60mph and runs a 14.5 in the 1/4 mile versus a high 17 or low 18 from a stock p5. make no mistake about it, its very very quick. :)

1st still has to take me for a ride in his turbo MP3. ;) Hehee. I may hit him up for help once I do get my turbo, too, for the install and all. Two pairs of hands are better than one!

i wouldn't be too concerned about mpg, but I'm still interested in what you guys get with them... I'd like to know how bad I'm in for it atleast.
