with the SRI, can you hear the spool up in the turbo a bit louder?

Yes the turbo is louder with the SRI and you can hear the BOV much better too.

Would it be pretty easy to swap the standard airbox back in? How soon will there be application-specific parts like this for the Mazdaspeed Protege?

Honestly it took about 3 mins to do. The airbox comes off with 4 bolts and the SRI goes on quite easily.

what is the deal with intakes?

is it just a matter of finding a intake that will fit onto existing things in your engine? like the intake pipe? am i wrong in thinking the only thing you need to worry about with an intake is if it somehow cools the engine TOO much? in which case it could cause a fuel cut or something? if that is the case, any intake for a p5/protege would work on the MSP right? it might just not fit on the existing intake pipe well?
