First event on race tires in the (DS) MSP----impressions

So i went to the Central Carolinas Region Test-n-Tune and autox on sat. and sun.
Although i've been autoxing for about 4 years, it was my first experience with anything stickier than azenis.
WOW! The grip is absolutely insane. I really couldn't believe it. I was so impressed and so pleased with the way the car felt all weekend.
I played around with pressures and took some great advice from a national champ on pressures and things. So on saturday i ran about 5 or 6 times (didn't want to do too many runs and kill too much rubber) and just played with pressures. I finally got it right at about 42-45 front and about 30 rear. This was perfect for my driving style cause i am a little rough on the front tires but i don't like the rears all jacked up because i think the car rotates just fine the way it is and i am afraid of snap oversteer. This may change but for right now, i think i will stick with this.
One thing i found interesting was that when i put a few psi too much up front, i got some nasty wheelspin which obviously = very bad for lsd so i fixed that in a hurry (although all the gravel on course didn't help any with that).

Sunday we planned on getting 4 runs (i believe there were 160 drivers) but because of an hour and a half delay because of a timing problem we ended up only getting 3. Once again i was really pleased with the balance and overall feel of the car. I ended up winning D stock against a BUNCH of WRXs. Guy in second had an 06 WRX also with race tires and was supposedly a pretty good driver (had been on race tires for the 2 previous seasons) and i beat him by just over a second. So i was also very pleased with the result. Not sure how i did in overall PAX because the results are not yet posted but i'll update when they are.

My main concern was overdriving the tires. I believe i only did this once, and very slightly at that (got a little understeer that i know would have been biiiiig understeer on street tires but, like i said, nothing too terrible).

In reality, i'm sure that i was actually underdriving the tires in most places simply because i'm not used to the grip levels---i know it will take a while. The most difficult thing is the fact that there is literally NO warning AT ALL when they're gonna go (had a nice little slide to figure that out). But i think i'm going to really enjoy finding their limits.

Sorry for the long post, but i just wanted to let everyone konw how pleased and impressed i was with the tires (hoosier A6s) and the car.
I hope to have a really competitive season.
Supposedly there is an extremely good ITR driver that always comes out and wins DS but unfortunately he was out of town and unable to make the event......shame--i would have liked to see how i stacked up.
Or maybe---he was scared of teh MSP ;-P

EDIT* if it matters, 2nd place was a 06 WRX---i mistyped "02" before

EDIT AGAIN: RESULTS: by PAX: 12th. by raw time: 28th out of 162 drivers.
In PAX, 6 of the 11 drivers who beat me were in pro class and i beat 3 others that were in pro class.
I can't wait to see what happens when i get used to the tires more!

225/45/17 Hoosier A6s. Got them used with about 90% tread life--i could never afford them new!!!!

That's awesome, man. Rcomps are like crack. Hope you can handle your high!

Check past results and see how that guy in the ITR did compared to the WRX's you beat this weekend.

Good luck in the future.

Drive another hour north and you can run with us and the mystery ITR. The ITR you speak of is a yellow one and is a member of my club.

We've got another DS MSP locally, but I don't think he will be on R'comps this year.

Our schedule is here if you ever think about making the trip.

I went back and found 1 event from last year. He was around 2 seconds quicker than the 2nd place WRX on a 40 second course. This is only one event though so take that for what it is worth.

Did you put these on the stock rims? No rubbing issues? Are you lowered or stock? Just curious because I could really use some decent grip and would like to put on 225's but I'm unsure about the fit.

I thought I heard the 225/45/17 had rubbing issues. The 225/40/17 should fit a lot better.

*my mistake* they are 225-40s. not 45s.

The ITR i know is yellow and i believe is driven by a guy named Brett.

The there were 3 other WRXs on Rcomps but only one of them is a good driver (the other 2......not so much---i remember beating one of them on street tires at an SCR event). But the guy who'se supposed to be good (his name is shane) he just got the Rcomps on the WRX. He ran them last year on i believe an older RX-7 but this was his first event on those tires.
Real cool guy though

I am in Greenville, so another hour North would put me at about 3 hours----that would be kinda rough. i've heard there's some nasty competition in Atlanta (a bunch of ITR's, etc) so i plan to make it down there at least once this year but i want to get a better feel for the tires before i do so.

Yea...his name is Brett Shillock. Really nice guy. I'll be going down to Atlanta once of twice this year. Maybe we will be there on the same weekend. I haven't checked the SCR schedule yet. Maybe I'll try a few of thier events too.

Ya, got slapped around last year in RacerXGirl's DS MSP in ATL by some ITRs. The WRXs we could usually handle ;)

Yeah, i will also be doing as many SCR events as possible.
It would be great if we could coordinate it in a way that we could all be at the same atlanta event (Mazda mafia, oh yeah) lol.

I know the SCR has at least 2 or 3 events here in greenville (April 29th and October 31st) that i will be at.
But i am going to try and do as many CCR events as possible so i can be eligible for the points championship there.

You guys are lucky you can pick events from various regions to run.

Here in Colorado, we run one series between two regions.

No real autocrossing events for several hundred miles in any direction!(second)

Go represent!

Let me know if you hear of more 225/40/17 A6 tires like that being sold I could use a few sets.

haha, couldn't we all.

I'm gonna find it hard to go back after these wear out. I'm hoping that they last until i sell the car (when i get out of school) but i'm only half way through my sophomore year now so that's not too likely.

I think that is the Brett guy is the same Bret S I ran against at the sept event in 05 with Triad but xelderx should be able to confirm that.

'D Stock' - Total Entries: 5 Trophies: 2 Times Total
1 78 Matt M Acura Integra 0:58.349
2 8 Bret S Acura Integra Typ3 argh 0:58.489 0.140
3 94 Shawn R Mazda Protege 0:59.437 0.948

He got me by about a second on a 60 second course but I was on RA-1's on stock wheels at the time. With Hoosiers I would think I could beat him.

Yeah, he's supposedly a real cool guy. Looking forward to (hopefully) running against him this year. That is--if he doesn't run pro class.
As far as your situation goes- i have heard that rcomps save you about 1-2 seconds on a 60 second course over street tires. But Ra1s are pretty darn sticky and i wouldn't consider them "street tires". Especially after they get worn down a little. It probablly would have been close though.

Ya know, i almost bought an ITR--they were about the same price as my MSP when i bought it (14.5k) back in october of 2005. Now they are still worth about the same amount of money and my car has dropped in value.
Now i'm not sayin i should have bought the ITR or that i absolutely looooove them or anything......;-)

Ya, you're not gonna pick up a full second going from RA-1s to Hoosiers / Kumhos. The RA-1s are pretty hard tho as far as race rubber is concerend, but still way better than any street rubber after a couple of runs
