Fiberglass sub box carpeting/covering?

My fiberglass sub box is almost done now, and the front is just being finished at this point. What should I do for carpeting or whatever? It fits in the right side of the back of my protege5 where it caves in a bit. See te attatched pic for what it looked like a while ago before the front had been started and a few more layers of fiberglass had been added.

I was thinking of maybe a black suede or carpet that would match the interior around it pretty well. Any ideas? I dont really want to paint it, and I haven't had good luck finding anything I can use in stores around me.

im doing the same thing right now, but with two of them in a sedan. all i have to do is bondo and cover it. i found some good looking material at a fabric store. i tried to find auto carpet, but none of them looked really good and theyre pretty stiff. since my box is pretty curvy, im getting a fabric almost like charcoal grey suede. looks hella nice. cant wait to finish it.

Crutchfield has carpet that matched the stock carpet in my MSP's trunk...it's a nice dark dark gray. Carpet stretches easily, too...

I think I'm going to go to a fabric shop near me tomorrow and msee if they have any charcoal/black color suede or something that'll look nice on it. I like the crutchfield carpet I found on their site, but it's expensive and I'd like to finish this up in the next few days and not have to wait for shipping.

I re-vinyled the pockets in my doors because I initially had the crossovers screwed into them, but I decided to put them in the door instead...the vinyl I used was a color called Whisper Black...it's dammmmmmmn close to the stock interior color.

u could also try www.selectproducts.com i'd suggest recarpeting the entire back area if u want it to match right. even if it is close it will still likely stand out from the stock carpet, and it won't have that clean look.

On the left side, did you have what looked like a vent? What is that for, and did you fiberglass in front of it, around it, or did you leave a port hole in the fiberglass?

Naw I just fiberglassed around everything there. The front is on the box now but it needs a few more layers wrapped around itself and the rest of the box since some air is coming out of that area, and I also need to do some sanding to make it fit perfectly since putting the front on changed the fit a little bit. I'm also trying to figure out how to secure it. I think I may just use industrial stregth velcro a gig piece holding it on the bottom to the carpet and a big piece holding the back to the wall.

I'm having trouble finding fabrics, so I think I may order a black neoprene online. Neprene should be pretty stretchy and I bet would look nice.

iluvmacs- i just fiberglassed my box to fit right in front of it. im not quite sure what its there for, but i doubt itll hurt anything to cover it up.

daviper- im going to drill a couple holes in the bottom of the trunk and put bolts with rubber washers to secure it down but still keep it sealed. also that way nobody can steal my stuff. i think im also going to use some different kinds of screws for the sub so you cant take it out with just a phillips screwdriver. i might use hex heads or something. ill have to go take a look at home depot and see what i find.

When making the mold, instead of taping on the carpet, could you use some sort of plastic bag? The force from brushing the resin should keep it smooth. I just want to make sure not to damage the carpet.

problem with that is you have wrinkles in it, just lay down masking tape, and if u want lay the tape down on something then pull it up and put it in, this way it will lose some of it's stickiness and not be so hard to lay down. even with the plastic bag you'd have to tape the edges down and the resin wouldn't nessicarily keep it down where it needs to be.

HEy does anyone have any tips on how to start a project like this. I have not played with firberglass before so I'm not quite sure what has to be done to get this accomplished. I pretty much want to do the same thing that DaViper but I'm not sure how you go about applying it to the inside of your car. Do you use aluminum foil or do you using masking tape?... Also when you DO get the back of it done how is it best to go about creating the face of the box? Appreciate any tips that could be forwarded.

thats a good link. its pretty detailed. also, when i did the part inside the car i used both masking tape and foil. i put two layers of tape and one layer of tin foil. didnt get anything on the carpet. but that s*** stinks for a while. my car smelled for about three days. although, id really recommend putting something over the bumper because i was sloppy and got a drip on it. heres another link for you also. this is the site i first learned with. http://web.njit.edu/~cas1383/proj/main/ altho, actually getting in there and doing it is the best way to learn to fg good. my first box had a couple bubbles, but my second is much better.
